Prof. Hartston obviously cares about what he is teaching. It is a 1.5 hour class it can get a little dry sometimes. You can tell he knows a lot about what he is teaching and that there is no where else he'd rather be than in a classroom teaching us. Moderate reading but plenty of time to get it done. Fair grader. Would recommend to a friend.

No other professor made me cry as much. Had to read hundreds of pages every week and try to decipher it and then write questions about the reading and sometimes no one could find answers.

He is one of my favorite professors this year, not because he's terribly interesting or anything, but his classes are very clear. I don't like to miss class much, and he doesn't rely on the textbooks too much, so I'm doing well in his classes with minimal work. However, students who are not particularly good at writing may find it more difficult.

Good teacher, has interesting lectures that sometimes could use a little more polish. He takes attendance randomly and its very important to come to class. The reading isnt that important, however it is important to do a lot of research for the papers. People say he is super hard but i got a pretty easy A in Making History.

The class is hard, and you have to keep up with ALL the reading. You also need to go to class and actually listen. He gives vocab which is extremely helpful. If you have any problems then you can always go to him and he will try his best to help. Overall, he is a good professor; although it is hard, you do learn a lot.

he is a great guy, but his class is dull and I am my classmates can't help but falling asleep. he assigns large amounts of homework each week and a huge research paper at the end. The midterm hurts! Oh and did I forget to mention that if you don't agree with his view of things then your wrong and will be gradded as such! I can't wait for the end.

Comment:

I found this class to be very informative and interesting, but as it was lecture-based, it tended to grow very dry after 1 1/2 hrs. This class is not straight history, but also historiography. This class is geared towards people who plan to become historians, so if you aren't interested in that, I'd recommend skipping this class. Also, do not skip any of the reading. Reading is imperative to doing well in this class. On top of it all, Professor Hartson is just a really nice guy.

Barney is a sweet-tempered and enthusiastic guy. As a teacher he is always on the level, putting his students before himself-- he works hard to be sure the material is as interesting and appropos as possible. A keeper!
