I loved Barrett's class, ENG5860 @ WSU. I had been encouraged by many English students to take his classes and I have never enjoyed a class as much as this one. I really improved as a critical reader, writer, and poet. Take his classes. He gives honest feedback, is encouraging, and brings forward the avant-garde. Prepare to read all day every day.

Barrett is a fantastic professor. He's brilliant, and so may seem intimidating to some students. But he always tries to engage people in discussion in class, even if people aren't too familiar with the course subject. He'll help you out on essays during office hours. It's tough material, but he definitely wants to help students learn.

Take this course if you want to read and learn. He is a tough grader but his feedback is super insightful and you will learn so much. I was a freshman taking this course and it was extremely difficult but as long as he sees you participating, he will help you out. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS for questions on the essays, he will help a LOT! v inspiring

Barrett is awesome! He has an oasis of knowledge, and he wants to share it with you! He assigns a lot of reading, but make sure you do it, and participate in class. He is all about discussion, and he is open to everything. I would absolutely love to take another class with him. He is always available to his students. Best professor I've taken!

Boring lectures. Barely any participation. Seems like the class does not grasp what he is trying to get across.

If you enjoy reading, this is a great class for you. Requires a ridiculous amount of reading per class and doesn't really follow the schedule all that well. Makes it hard to keep up with the readings if you are going full time. Gives a few open book quizzes and exams. Although only required to write one paper, the exams might as well count.

I had two classes with Watten as an undergrad, liked him quite a bit, and found him fairly approachable. He's brilliant, actually. But as an instructor, this seems to translate into this huge gap where he can't sort of reach you well enough to explain or contextualize the mountains of reading he's assigned. He's not a very good instructor.

Prof Watten is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He is passionate and brilliant about the material he teaches, which is why he puts so much into the syllabus. As a student with dyslexia, it takes me 3x as long to read and he was always cool about it. He is fair and relaxed, and never asks for more than he can give, but wants you to learn!

Hope you like psychoanalysis because that's the literary theory you'll focus on for most of the semester. Then you'll be so far behind, you'll have three 6-10 page papers to write in the last 5 weeks of class. He's a very fair grader, really helpful, and a good instructor, but the class wasn't the most organized ever.

VERY intellectual. encourages class discussion. However, he's a genius, so it's difficult to understand where he's coming from if you don't think on his level (most of us don't), so it can be challenging but he is a fair grader. You can always talk to him if you have questions. i've learned A LOT. Most passionate, intelligent professor i've had

The professor was very unorganized and kept changing the syllabus throughout the course. He had a insane amount of readings and his tests and exams are almost as ridiculously long winded as he was during lecture. He was very unhelpful through the course and we only used some of the books he required us to purchase. If you can avoid him, do it.

I loved Professor Watten as an instructor. There is a great deal of reading so be prepared. He is very, very smart so his discussions can be heavily abstract. He was very fair with grades and even negotiated with his students on the last two papers. You will work but you will learn a ton. Great class.

Professor Watten is a great instructor. He is a very fair grader but be prepared to work. His reading load is pretty heavy. He is brilliant so the discussions are great but are very theoretical and sometimes fly over your head. By the end of the semester it all comes together. Hard work but very rewarding.

As a graduate student taking a 5000 level course with Dr. Watten was painful. I ended up withdrawing. He had no hard deadlines, he had no direction for the students. He's very open for discussion which could be good, but because he doesn't steer students away from faulty thinking. Too unstructured for my liking.

Dr. Watten is the best professor I have ever taken. His teaching is intellectual, yet grounded, and encompasses so many different scholarly realms that I was sure they would never fit together at first. But at the end, they came together like magic, and I was blown away by the message he had succeeded in presenting to us. No passion? Don't bother

Absolutely wonderful professor. Is obviously brilliant yet does not put students down for not being up to his level. I learned a lot from him and would not consider him as a difficult grader whatsoever so long as one follows the instructions and attends lecture. Would recommend him to everyone.

Due to his ultra liberal views I was graded down on my speech, even though at the time I was presenting a liberal message. He is biased and normally I get A's on speech's but with him I did not meet up to his ultra liberal views. All in all, he's not worth your time.

I did a presentation in his class and normally I get high grades for what I do. However due to his extreme liberal views I was graded down. What a waste of time it was to take his class.
