The class is very easy, but you need to show up to class in order to get a good grade. He gives plenty of extra credit, so do as much as possible. The tests are pretty easy because he only puts what he has covered on them.

Comment:

A self described math professor for people who hate math. His class is tough, but he's extremely willing to help you succeed in any way possible. Not for the faint of heart in the slightest, however. He will yell at you and kick you out if you're late. A warm man under a tough exterior.

He cares about his students so much and really wants them to pass. His lectures can tend to be all over the place sometimes as he goes off on a lot of tangents but when you ask for clarity he is happy to help. There are only a few tests and he gives a lot of extra credit.

If you are sensitive then do not take him. He is a very smart man ND you will learn a lot in his class. He is understanding and really cares about students. Do and don'ts: DONT CO ME TO CLASS LATE. DONT TEXT IN CLASS. ASK QUESTIONS AFTER CLASS NOT DURING CLASS. IF YOU AR CONCERNED OR SC RED OF MATH TELL HIM! fyi: hes straight forward and swears.

If you you aren't good at math do not take Mittag as a teacher. His class is the most unstructured, unorganized, offensive thing I have ever experienced. He can probably introduce new topics to people that already get math well but otherwise you will be screwed from day one. He will only teach sometimes 30 minutes out of a 2.5 hour class. Blasphemy

Mittag is not your average professor. I can see why many students wouldn't like him but If you show up, you'll do alright. No book (he makes it by using notes) no homework, no quizzes and only a few tests. Easy A for me.

He gives readings that are pretty short, just gotta skim though them. The only other work needed to do was 2 papers. They had to be about 5 papers. I found them easy. He is very funny and i always enjoyed going to class. Attendance is kinda needed, he takes it basically everyday.

I get it. He is funny, full of NY attitude and knows a lot on the subject, and he will make sure you know what a fabulous mathematician he is. However, I have learned very little in his class, due to his lack of focus, course structure and overall quality of teaching. Very boring and confusing class. I had to miss work hours to attend. Waste of $$

Extremely unfocused. Is rarely on topic, and if he does speak on-topic, it is not helpful. He reads directly from the book and rarely explains anything on the board. He is so disorganized that you can't figure out what he wants you to study! If you are doing poorly in his class, prepare to be ridiculed. Avoid at all costs!

Complete waste of a semester. Goes off topic all the time about other subjects that don't relate to the class at all. We only reviewed 2 topics that we could've learned in 3 weeks but spent the whole semester. We only took 2 quizzes and then a midterm. Rude to students and often tries to threaten in a jokingly matter. If you want an easy A go here.

Mittag is definitely not your average professor. There is no textbook, the work is pretty straightforward, and the class can be boring at times. However, Mittag is an eccentric personality, very funny when he can be as well as caring about his students. If you want a more unorthodox way of learning math, take Mittag, he's something else.

Mittag is awesome, he runs a really fun class, He has an encyclopedic knowledge of the history of mathematics. He doesn't assign much work at all- a couple of readings, and some "papers," which he wants in bullet format. If you show up and put any effort into the class, you will get an A.
