nice guy but the class was really random and ambiguous. grades by rank so you can get 90% and still fail if everyone else does better than you. Students make up the test questions which makes the exams harder since they can take any detail from the text and turn it into a test ques. lec and text completely diff material but must know both for exams

Though he was gruff at first to filter out poor students, he turned out to be an extremely helpful professor and generous man. He truly wants students to succeed and offers valuable advice to aspiring accountants. Unfortunately for UCD, he's retiring. It would be a shame if the dept eliminated the 118 class, which is highly regarded because of Bay.

Bay runs an interesting class. The class seems very scattered but topics are interesting and unique. Group project is easy and somewhat enjoyable but three exams are difficult. You must read the book, attend lecture and taking good notes. If you study for the exams, you will do fine in this class. I recommend it.

His lectures where interesting and applicable to the real world. However, some material i found useless like all the japanese terminology. Test questions comes from students AND him. Book was long, boring yet majority of it was on the test. Must attend lecture. Everyone got a A on the group project. Tedious to sit and take notes for 2 hrs.

SO RANDOM, but an A is possible. A lot of reading, tedious lectures, class is almost mandatory b/c the students write the test questions. The group project is not so bad, almost everyone gets an A. Start a question pool before the 1st midterm so people will get each other's questions before the test. He will let you make the pool for ur project

What a class; it's based on a true curve where ur grade is based on ur rank only. To do well, you must place highly, so approach the class in a competitive way (ie, write hard ?s). Exams are very hard and the marketing project is crucial (1/2 grade), so get in a GOOD GROUP! Lectures are a bunch of cool stories, but most test ?s come from the text.

This class is SO RANDOM. Believe the other raters when they say this. Don't get me wrong, he is a very nice guy and means well but the lecture are completely pointless but you HAVE to listen because chances are a lot of it's going to be on the exams. Be prepared to learn random stuff, and read the book very closely.

Students write test questions and will try to screw others over, so beware! Have fun learning random Japanese phrases and memorizing the intricacies of the Toyota Production System. Most of this class felt like I was listening to my grandpa tell stories from "back in the day." Butler's a good guy, but his teaching style is lazy.

This class was defenetly one of the most useful classes I ever took. I learned so much and would recommend this class to anyone. Butler is great at explaining and presnting the material and is pretty fair with the grading. However, this class is not that easy students make the question so you have to read the book very closely.

Tests are hit or miss. Fair in pretty much everything. Makes the course really interesting. Not so sure the rest of the University is ready for his grading system though.

This class is hard, but awesome. Definitely one of the most useful classes ever. You should definitely go to lecture, homework is half your grade and can be time consuming (all nighters), but if you want to learn something, this is the class to take. Lectures aren't boring, and if you pay attention, the class is fun.

probably the most random class you'll ever take...Butler meant well and is a really nice guy, but his class is total bull. yeah, it seems easy at first because the students create the questions, but trust me...it ends up screwing you up in the end. he rambles on and goes on tangents...the only thing i took from the class table dinner etiquette.

I like HIM, but hated this class. He seemed at times like he was just rambling about nothing, but then it ended up on the test! It was an easy class because all you have to do is go to lecture and skim the definitions in the text. There was a group project that was extremely vague. He graded it easy, but it wasn't worth much because he curves.

Hit or miss, for me it was a miss. Test are totally roll of the dice. I can say I learned something, but I think the class could be more effective. Hated the group work because of the ambiguity of the assignment, but he grades it easily. The only lecture I enjoyed, was the one he bring back former students.

you will not learn anything. lectures do not pertain to marketing at all. you will have to know every chapter in the book for the test even though he does not reference the book once!

Pros: Lectures are fun and interesting sometimes, lots of useful real world info. "curves" by the mean which is pretty curvy at times. Hes easy to talk to and very responsive to q'ns. CONS: Students make the questions for every test=very subjective. Group project and paper sucks unless you do it w/friends. 2hr class Lots of reading assign.

This was a great class with Butler. The lecture was very interesting and the material seems very helpful. Just go to lecture everyday and you will be fine, the material in the book is easy to learn as long as you read it. Even though the class is easy if you go lecture everyday, you still learn a lot from this class. One of the better professors.

this was one of the hardest classes i ever took at davis. your grade depends on your group members and the homeworks are FREAKING LONG. many all nighters spent on doing hw for this class. midterm and final were insanely hard but there is a huge curve. butler knows a lot about tax but don't depend on him to teach you. HE DOESNT TEACH! MANY TAX RETUR

(Before i start my rant, I got an A- in the class)Butler is an intelligent man, but i really HATED him passionately as a teacher. He is incredibly lazy and lectures on perhaps the most boring of the boring subjects. A whole week on etiqutte.... Don't even get me started. Probably one of my least favorite professors at UC Davis, even than Brinkley

His lectures are kind of unorganized and it sucks that students are writing the questions for the exam b/c that means you have to pay attn to everything he says. He was ok at the beginning of the quarter but lecture got progressively worse every test. I thought the final was crazy hard but hopefully everyone else failed. Rank order sucks.
