never drank the Belva Kool-aide. After 1:1 audition for concert band, she didn't even mention anything about my playing. Her exact words-"I don't get you." I pressed her to articulate, but she couldn't. no credibility. She made a false narrative about me but couldn't defend her logic. lacks critical thinking & won't allow evidence alter her opinion

Overall, she is a wonderful teacher. She loves to tell her students stories and also talks to them after each practice. From a distance, she looks intimidating, but once you get to know her, she is pretty awesome!

Dr. Prather is easily the most amazing faculty member in the music department at MSU. She is an incredible conductor and mentor and always works to develop personal and caring relationships with her students. It is truly an honor to perform under her guidance. She commands a lot of respect, but she deserves ALL of it. Truly an amazing woman.

This ensemble would have ruined my tone had I listened to her. If you like band, good direction, fairness, and constructive criticism, stay away from her. If you like crap direction, playing loud all the time, synthesized piano and harp and a director who spends over half the rehearsal talking about nothing, then she's the one for you.

I think she is a wonderful teacher for those wanting to play in band and to do music education. For those, like myself, who want to do orchestra and perform, not so much, which doesn't make her bad, it's just different interests clash. She's an extremely demanding teacher which is good in any music program because it makes you word harder.
