I took dr Gung's O-chm lab, he never give a lecture except the first class for the whole semester, he just want you guys to search by yourself and the test is tough and unpredictable, the practice exam is useless.

I took Gung's summer Organic I course and I don't go to Miami during the school year. I read all of these comments before his class and thought I would give him the benefit of the doubt. Be warned: they are all true. Test/quiz questions come from course hero & his version of a "flipped classroom" is "teach yourself the chapter". Good luck.

I found this teacher to be unacceptable. I feel the course was a complete waste of my time and money. The class is great if you are simply seeking credit and a good grade and a complete waste if you need to learn the material. He was lazy and did not appear to care for the student's understanding of the content.

Does nothing that a computer can't do. During his lectures he reads off of the slides (from the textbook publisher) and appears to be unfamiliar with them. I quit paying attention to his lectures halfway through the semester and was fine. Writes tests over minute material that you read and assume doesn't matter. Avoid at almost all costs.

Dr. Gung is not a very clear lecturer. The powerpoints are not very detailed, but that is his sole source for lecturing. Dr. Gung appears not to want to teach, but I wish he would make more of an effort to show he cares about the students and wants us to learn O Chem. I passed the class, but feel like I did not learn much.

Do you like teaching yourself Organic Chemistry? Do you like guessing on what exactly is going to be on the exam? If not, please learn from my mistake and take a different professor, even if you're supposed to be in the major's section of organic chemistry. Dr. Gung reads off a powerpoint every single morning and teaches nothing.

Comment:
Dr. Gung lectures over the online power point slides essentially word for word. The professor told us at the beginning of the semester that the lecture only covers about 25% of the material so reading the book and teaching ourselves the rest was necessary. Organic Chemistry is a tough subject as it is; teaching myself was another story.

Yells at you for asking questions to further understand the material. Doesn't test on overarching themes, rather tests on minute details that don't contribute to knowledge. Does not teach or explain material, so you have to read the book.

Great guy, but worst professor in the history of all professors. Miami does a poor with its o-chem lab professors... He was not at all helpful and was very unclear in what he taught during the 1-hour pre-lab lectures. When I went to ask him for help, he made me feel dumb. Silver lining: He curves the class SO much.

He is definitely the WORST professor I have ever seen in my entire lifetime. Very unpredictable person. He merely reads the slides, thus a robot can replace his career as a teacher. His teaching style is undoubtedly very discouraging.

Dr. Gung is a brillant researcher, but a mediocre teacher. He either goes over material for too long, or doesn't doesn't bother going over it at all. I found that attendance is not imperative to ensure an A in his class, but expect to be baffled by certain expectations on quizzes, as some questions come out of left field. Nice guy though......

Dr. Gung may be a great research chemist but he was by far the worst professor I had at MUOhio. It is a shame that he does not communicate well or teach well. I did exceptionally well (best grade in class) in first semester organic chemistry. Miami of Ohio should let graduate students teach classes that can teach.

Dr. Gung's pre-lab lectures were not very helpful and the class was a bit disorganized, a lot of times taking more than the alotted time for the lab. The grading of the lab reports was unclear at first and not graded fairly. However, he does have a slight curve which makes up for it. Dr. Gung is a nice guy, not a great professor.

I had Dr. Gung for Grad level Organic Synthesis and I loved the class. I met with him for course selection and told him I was scared of Organic/didn't perform well in undergrad. He encouraged me to take his course and he would help me all he could. I would show up at his office to go over reactions with him. He helped trememdously and I got a B

The lab itself was easy enough, which became the problem; he offers a lot of extra credit so your grades are artificially inflated, then creates nearly impossible midterms and finals to even out the grading distribution. Forget about arguing over points and he's far from approachable. Not a bad guy, but he'd be best in research.

Dr. Gung is a terrible teacher! He is so unclear and impossible to understand. You're definitely better off just reading the book, but going to class can be helpful to figure out which parts of the book he will/won't cover on the tests. His tests are fairly easy, but make sure you know what he wants you to know.

Gung is a preety good professor. Once you figure out his tests and how to study for them its not that hard of a class but it requires alot of extra work and studying but it is also ochem, overall he's a preety good professor and he'll probably give lots of extra credit to help you do better in the class
