Comment:

Really nice guy, but I was confused. He doesn't make you buy MyMathLab, but I wish I had, so I could have learned through that. Got a B in my previous math classes with other teachers, and liked math, but a D here. There aren't enough opportunities to increase your grade if you've failed any exams. Only 5 exams; no other homework or extra credit.

Mr. Avant is a great teacher, but sometimes he confuses me. I enjoyed his class and his teaching. He cares about his students as well as their learning. He will let you retake a test, if you want to retake it. He breaks down the math for each student and he will help you if you ask for help. You can always go to his office to get help with homework

When I started his class, I gave him my letter from adaptive needs saying I have a hearing problem and that he needs to not talk to the board. He needs to turn around and talk to the class. He told me he wouldn't change his teaching style for me. Against the ADA! I went to the Dean and dropped the class.

He answers questions during tests and will let you retake some, but he is so confusing and doesn't even know what he's teaching. Our class spent more time correcting his mistakes on the board than learning. If you have to take him, show up every day and get 10 points added to your final. Good luck.

He was never willing to work with me with the fact I am hard if hearing. I dropped the class because of that. The Dean over math dept even said if I wanted to I had a right to sue the school over him breaking a federal law (not working with me) and that I would win the case. Don't take if have any sort of "disability."

Avant has had a TBI a few years ago and that's why some people believe he is hard to understand. I'm a history major and know nothing of math, but I made an A in his class by simply listening and doing the work. He was even nice enough to help me on a project for Education over a year after I took his class. Hands down great guy and inspirational.

He can't teach. He's not clear as to when the tests are, very unorganized, at the end of the semester he asked us to try to turn in a worksheet on a day we didn't have class, it turned out to be an exam. Do not take this professor!

I took him for Finite Math. Yes he was not always 100% clear with his words but he knows his stuff. Get to know him on a personal level and you will do just fine. Go to class! And bonus thing, he doesn't use math lab buy your book an amazon! Also, he typically lets students redo test to get up to an 80, which helps!

Professor Avant is probably the nicest person in Troy, especially on the mornings that he ate his Cheerios! His class is hard, but his tests are take-home. He always asks if everyone wants an A, and starts you off with an A. I managed to finish with an A. One thing I'll never forget from that class is how to spell S-T-A-T-I-S-T-I-C-S !!!

I would like to start by saying Dr. Avant is a nice man. I do not prefer his teaching. He is very vague and uses few examples. He makes errors when working out problems, and sometimes even gets things wrong when helping you. He will promise something and forget/not do it. He just had surgery so I am hoping this is the reason. Semi-difficult class.

Worst teacher in the history of academics. Will tell you you are having a 30 minute quiz and will give you a full two part test. Thinks everybody already has an understanding of what he is teaching and therefore goes over the problem one time, and one time only. He makes people feel stupid for asking questions by saying "You really don't get this?"

I took him for Finite Math. It's not the easiest class, but he's a great professor. Always in a good mood! He's willing to go above and beyond when it comes to helping you. But if you don't attend class regularly and put forth the effort you'll regret it.
