He was a good professor for the most part. He is very approachable and does not grade too hard. You definitely have to put in effort in every assignment and there are a lot. I would recommend him because you get what you put in. He is a very fair teacher.

Comment:
This man is extremely condescending and rude. He is one of those teachers that will post a minimum essay requirement and then give you a D on the essay because you met the minimum. This would be fine if this was explained prior to the project but he blindsides you with it and it is terribly difficult to try to recover.

I took this class online; I am a returning student that has been away from campus for many years (I'm guessing I'm probably older than Dr.Schopen) The class was loaded with writing. Dr. S. always included his comments and critiques of my essays and I found him to be fair and objective. Not my favorite class but by far my favorite professor.

This was the last class I took before graduating, but it ended up being one of the best. I couldn't have cared less about American history before, but I learned a ton and actually really liked the material.

I took his online course for CH 203, and I learned so much that I decided to take his online CH 201 class as well. Fantastic teacher who wrote all CH online courses - and each one has been more eye opening than the next. Wish he taught other subjects!

Very entertaining~He makes the material interesting and cracks jokes...but you have to pay attention. It's worth it, especially for a mandatory class.

this dude is horrible, i understand that some people think its cute, or funny that this bitter old man yells at students. but i really think he is boring as all hell, and straight up rude and condescending. he is especially bad if you have him for discussions...

This class greatly cultivated my appreciation for western history and culture. The discussion leader is critical, like it or not, conforming to their standard will make you a better writer as well as help your grade!

I'm not really sure why he's teaching this subject. He was in the Navy, I believe, but now seems to have little to no respect for this country. I am so glad that he is not teaching at UNR anymore. I was really excited to take this class, and he ruined it for me. But, the text was good.

This class was not as hard as people make it out to be. Dont worry! Take Schopen because he knows his stuff and he is a great lecturer and thats all he will be to you. Pick your discussion leader wisely, they can make or break u, they handle your grades not schopen unless hes ur discussion leader. Get Allbritten or B. Smalls. Show up to lectures!

lectures are interesting but your grade all depends on your discussion leader. his tests are a list of 20 words and you pick 8 to write on.

This professor is sometimes funny, occassionally insightful, rarely as amazingly wise as he wants you to think he is.

I took this class online through independent study. Schopen kept on top of my lessons, never more than a week to grade, and never more than a day to reply to my emails. Could have been really boring to do it online, but he made the assignments interesting, and actually commented on them. Great teacher

THIS IS THE WORST SUBJECT EVER! However, since we all have to take it, I would go with Bernie. His humor and enthusiasm almost make the topic fun. This class has A LOT of reading and writing, be prepared. Also, if you can choose, try to get B. Small for a discussion leader. She is very helpful, especially on the exams.
