Betsy is very funny and approachable. Her class is always very interesting and she's an engaging and challenging professor. She is also incredibly hard on her students and has sometimes unreasonable expectations of her class. Meeting with her is usually unhelpful.

Teaching quality varies wildly. Knows a lot about her subject but does not prepare for lectures. Authoritarian rules (no bathroom use during 2-hour class, cannot take notes on computer, etc.). Subjective and often harsh grades. Never admits she is wrong.

She will treat you how you treat her/her class. If you put forth an effort and take the class seriously, she will be one of the most wonderful teachers you may have. If you are arrogant, put in a high school level effort, and goof off, she will have no problem scolding you like your mother should. Teaches science & how to think about/approach it

She expects a high degree of work from her students but will unfailingly reward the work students put in with enthusiasm, encouragement, and further questions - deeply committed to helping students understand the subject matter and embrace holistic work in the sciences.

Betsy is an excellent teacher. Out of all the Bennington faculty, she is my favorite, and I'm an art student. Though she may come off as mean at times, she only kicks your ass when you really deserve it and when she feels that you can do better. Not only that, but she really cares about all her students.

Betsy teaches her students how to be curious. She is brilliant and supportive. She is not for everyone, and will not stand for stupid, flighty girls or arrogant men, and she cannot hide her distaste. But for me, she showed me how to ask testable questions and how to love science, and I grew immensely and in ways I cannot fully thank her for. JL

what a nightmare of a teacher. arrogant, abusive, thick-skulled - basically a re-fried, low quality high school teacher who wormed her way into a cush position and lacks the humility and insight to realize that her longevity has nothing to do with her quality, rather some mysterious sway she has with the administrators.

the worst teacher at bennington. needs to learn manners and humanity. too proud and arrogant and surprisingly dumb although she likes to think otherwise. unhelpful, manipulative, gross sense of humor, curses in class and at students, the worst experience you could have with any teacher at bennington.

Betsy is the most inspiring teacher I have ever had. She is brash, loud, animated and doesn't take crap from anybody. If you have a true love of science and are looking for a teacher with the most flair and attitude on campus Ms. Sherman is the way to go. Her class was unforgettable.

Betsy is the rudest, most inappropriate teacher i have ever had. she favors males over females in her classes and she picks on/makes fun of students who ask questions that make her feel inadequate. this professor has no place teaching. for the topic matter, she is wrong in several things she teaches
