Comment:
Dr. Lofquist may not be an arbitrary grader, but he grades like an arbitrary grader. He looks for highly specific answers to open questions on his tests, and he looks for specific concepts used in specific ways on his essays, but his lectures are unclear and tedious, and the reading material he provides is abstruse. Not helpful in office hours.

Seems like a very nice man, however the course was difficult. I do not recommend the Sociology of Sports class if you are 1) a visual learner, or 2) unfamiliar with professional sports. The course was lecture heavy, with no PowerPoint and nothing to copy down. Note taking was very difficult. Readings were incredibly long and hard to understand.

He's very unclear and doesn't talk about his expectations. He wants very specific things but acts like he doesn't. You'll feel as though you know all the info but your answers they're not good. Beware of the paper, he'll act like its no big deal and he doesn't care how you write it but he will criticize it and it'll make a dent in your grade.

Dr. Lofquist is awesome. Great man and very knowledgeable. Lectures with no specific guidelines like powerpoint or anything. He tries to have class discussions and show videos, all depends on the vibe of the class. Lectures are vary vanilla and bland, but office hours are golden. Soc of Sports easy A 3 papers thats it. More than willing to help you

Just Awesome. Only course grades are journals which he will help you with during his office hours. Ask for clarification and he will explain exactly what he wants in them. Put some work in and you'll get the A. Great person, and it's actually ok to disagree with him in your journals - just back it up well. Glad I took this

If you're are present for lectures then you will have most of the materials on exams. Reading is encourage but not mandatory, there are options of the questions on the exam. He always gives a study guide. USE HIM AS A RESOURCE, he is very helpful during office hours.

Dr. Lofquist is a good professor. This course in particular has no exams and your entire grade is based on weekly journals of about 3-4 paragraphs, written twice a week. Journals are handed in 3 times throughout the semester. He is a little unclear about his expectations at first. As long as you are engaged and reading the material you'll be okay.

Lofquist is a great professor. This class is a breeze if you show up the majority of the time. 3 sets of journals are collected throughout the semester, each set of about 10 entries, and that's the entire grade with participation. I easily got close to a 95 on every set without reading much. Easy and really interesting topics covered.

Interesting class that requires very little of you. You can occasionally do the readings to get ideas for journals. Go to class so you can get more ideas for journals but there is no need to take intensive notes. Very helpful and will look over the journals for you. No tests

Lofquist is an awesome professor. As long as you show up occasionally and do some of the readings you'll be fine. The material is interesting and there were no tests. All grading was based on journals which he grades fairly.

LOVE this class. So interesting, and the fact that there are no tests is nice too.I disagree with other's comments on here, my journals are only like 80% on the class discussions, and 20% on nothing class related. As long as you take what you learn in class and apply it to similar situations and talk about sociological concepts you get an easy a.

One of my favorite SOC professors (the other is Tamura). Great lecturer, very helpful, great sense of humor. Two papers, two tests, very interesting lectures. The readings are difficult, but he explains them all thoroughly. Also, don't let him scare you into freaking out about your papers; he's not an impossibly hard grader at all.

Lofquist's class are a waste. He repeats his lectures over and over again and they're all bone dry boring. I've mistakenly taken two classes with him and regretted them both. He's a wicked hard grader. Also he makes you buy HIS book ($70) and I never opened it ONCE!

No tests, just journals every few weeks on the course material. He grades the journals hard and does not give you guidelines for them. Class is boring most of the time with little class discussion unfortunately. If you agree with what he says in class in your journals you'll be fine.

Dr. Lofquist is one of th best teachers I've ever taken. He really wants his students to learn and understand the material given. A s long as he feels you are trying and SHOWING UP to class, he will help you with anything. His classes are extremely interesting;I'm also taking Soc of Deviance, also a great class. Take him! U won't be sorry.

Good class if not a good test taker and good at writing because there are no tests just journals. It̢۪s hard to understand what he wants you to write about, but as long as you agree with him you'll do ok. Class is really interesting and I learned a lot.

It's true that there are no tests- you just write journals. The subject matter is interesting, but he tends to be dry and go into too much detail. There was almost no class discussion, which was disappointing. I still learned a lot, though.

What a waste of time. Lofquist is a nice man, but this class was stupid. I missed two weeks of class, and when i came back we were talking about the same thing. Discussions lead nowhere and I don't think the man knows what he wants on the journal. Sometimes he'd make hardly any comments and I'd still get an 85. No tests though!
