Comment:
Professor Nygren is an extremely intelligent teacher. He's very articulate and knowledgeable in philosophy and theory and is very kind toward the students. Some of the films watched in class can be in all honesty, very very boring, but it's all a part of the whole theoretical film studies. LOVED HIM.

Last review shows a problem not with the prof., but with the type of students attracted to a class with "Film" in the title. Some students expect to watch The Dark Knight all semester I guess, that won't happen. The film theory class is about theory (whoa!) Difficult, but Scott is very lenient, and knows how complex this is. Why are you in college?

one of the worst classes ive taken. i learned a few big words and saw a few crappy movies. the reading is heavily demanding and if you're absent you're screwed. this class sucked out my passion for film. how can you convince someone that a horrible film is better? by talking about the "theory of film"! stick a fork in me, im done with this.

He's highly educated, but the other students are right--it's like having a boring textbook read aloud. This class made film boring for me--but don't get me wrong, he's helpful if you're struggling. I really didn't even know if I was struggling? I hated the syllabus. He claims to DROP A LETTER GRADE FOR THREE ABSENSES! Yikes. I wouldn't take him 2x.

Fantastic class! He cares about his students and offers help if you ask; is very articulate. The class challenges students to think differently about film, especially since the material is very theory-based and abstract and requires a lot of reading, but you learn a lot about different art movements and world cultures. I highly recommend his class.

He's abstract, but in the way you would imagine a truly creative and original thinker to be. I left the class with an ability to walk through a musuem and actually understand what was going on in contemporary art. a great talent and asset to the University of Florida.

Boring and confusing class. Unclear assignment sheets (did not match up with syllabus, so I ended up with a C on a paper--even when I talked to him about it he didn't seem to care). But to be fair, I didn't work very hard or pay attention and ended up with a B+. Oh and I did have a crush on him. He's cute.

Dr. Nygren is the best professor at UF. He is TRUELY interested in his students and helping them develop as filmmakers. He's helpful, friendly, approachable and knowledgeable. Regardless of your interests in film (narrative, experimental, documentary) Dr. Nygren supports you and pushes you to become a better artist. There is no doubt in my mind that he is one of the best teachers under whose guidence I've ever had the privilage of studying.

As for the previous post, I couldn't disagree more. Dr. Nygren's lectures are intriguing and provide you with an opportunity to THINK about issues in ways that are complex and meaningful. He's unassuming, kind and one of the best professors I've had at UF.

This is the most boring class I've ever sat through. I repeatedly wanted to STAB MYSELF IN THE EYE WITH MY PEN when I listened to him talk. This class is no longer required for the upper-division film courses, so unless you like please-kill-me-now theory, there is no reason to take it!
