He's a great professor and he is pretty passionate in his lectures. The lectures are very detailed so take good notes. The labs are crucial. Quizzes in the beginning of lecture so make sure to review material from the previous week for easy points. He answers questions well too. File assignments/notes effectively, heavy review for exams needed.

Comment:

Skaar was one of the best professors Ive had for a lecture. He allowed students to ask questions during lecture and answered them kindheartedly. Unfortunately, there was a large amount of homework. Each class has a quiz. Each lab has a worksheet. And after lab you have another assignment that must be turned in, in paper, outside class hours.

He can be a tough grader and his grading criteria isnt that clear. Hes a really nice guy that gives amazing lectures! He really knows what hes talking about. The tests are difficult and you really need to study for them.

Comment:

He's okay, a little old school so kind of stuck in his ways. Grading kinda unfair, depends on the TA you get for the section you're put in. Tests are big--STUDY. Material isn't hard, just lots of memorizing. Lectures are okay, he can fly a bit without giving lots of substantial material, but don't skip.

Skaar wasn't too bad of a teacher. Seemed knowledgable about the industry, the powerpoint notes could have been put together better. An easy quiz in class and wks in lab once a week. Homework wasn't to bad either, it was sometimes long. Study hard for the tests as they are fill in the blank and multiple choice. Farm tours were fun and interesting.

Skaar is an alright professor. Just do your homework but he can be rude to students. He doesn't allow collaboration on Tophat quizzes. You only have two exams so studying is really important. Just show up to labs and you will get credit.

A fantastic lecturer. Has lots of stories and comments that you can only get in class. Fun labs at the ISU farms. Lots of study material if you complete the worksheets. Beware of the TAs!

This class is impossible if you are unwilling to regurgitate word-for-word what Skaar says in lectures. If you have even a slight background in beef you will struggle because objectively right answers are wrong because they aren't exactly what Skaar was looking for. The pop quizzes are extra credit and the lectures are long/pointless.

Loved ANS 101! He tries to make sure everyone understands the material. Labs are fun and tests are relatively easy (but lengthy). Very helpful for people who do not have a farming background. Just make sure to keep up with the homework and prepare for the in class quizzes.

He's a little spacey, but his class is fun! He curves his exams up so at least some people get a 100%. You'll know exactly what you have to study and as long as you memorize it all you'll be good.

Dr. Skaar really cared about students and if you were struggling he did his best to help. I had him for animal science 101 and i don't come from a farming background and still did well. He had lots of homework, one due every week and a quiz in class every week for 5 points but it was manageable. Tests were easy if you listened and did the work.

I absolutely HATE this professor. I lost points on my exam because I used the word "is" instead of "was" and when I asked him about it he told me that I had all the right answers but they weren't worded the right way. I am a beef producer in this class and he makes me hate working with cattle.

I enjoyed Dr. Skaar's teaching method. He is laid-back, funny, and informative. Your grade comes from only two tests, so be sure to study for them if you want to do well. Super easy class if you take the time to study and/or have a farm background at all. Fill out the study guide, study them, memorize the breeds, and you will do well.
