I have no idea how I got an A, but I'm not complaining. Pros: Funny, captivating speaker. Extremely understanding and empathetic person. Kind of weird, but in a good way. There isn't a terrible amount of work. Cons: Lots of dense reading, and graded by very few things. Expectations for grading were slightly confusing.

SUPER funny and engaging. He made critical theory so interesting and funny. Would recommend 100%. Tons of time needed for reading and understanding the material, and the exams were memorizing concepts, but it wasn't too bad. I often disagreed with the content, but he loved to have people argue with him. I'll be trying to take his other classes.

The class is pretty easy. He assigns reading and discussion questions to answer before class, and then during class he goes over the questions and promotes discussion. There are four concept card quizzes that involve memorizing 73 concepts, but aren't super challenging and are self-graded. Overall, class discussions get really interesting.

Honestly my favorite professor so far. Made class interesting, funny, relatable and made you think. Helps give you a different perspective on life and ways to live. I looked forward to going to his class every day. Self graded readings and exams. He just wants you to read the content and if you keep up on that you will be fine.

Amazing professor. Incredibly inspirational in his ability to inspire change of perspective in students. Increased my ability to look at the world in the light of many different philosophers.

You have about 4 exams each one is 10 concept words and you only count the final grade for one. One paper, very easy only about 500 words. The final exam is the same format as the others. He gives you flashcards on Quizlet and gradually adds throughout the semester. You end with about 73 you have to know. Be prepared for some weird lectures though.

I liked the guy at first, but after a couple weeks, the class just turned in to Butterfield rambling on to us for an hour and a half about things going on in the media and his political views. Almost everything is self graded except one super easy two page paper!

Dr. Butterfield loves to lecture. Some of his lectures are hard to follow, but the lectures are not needed to do well in the class. He is very good at motivating his students to write. He is a pretty easy grader and there in 4-5 writing assignments the whole semester with a few pop quizzes. As a person, he an interesting guy and genuinely nice.

Quite possibly the best professor in the business. I've not only learned more from this odd fellow than seven of his peers welded together at the helmet, but he made me laugh so hard I grew an extra nipple.

Butterfield is a very interesting and intelligent professor. However, his class is basically just him rambling for an hour and a half. Sometimes, his lectures are captivating and fun, especially if he puts a personal anecdote or two in there, but often they are just retreads of the same question or concept for the entirety of the class period.

Butterfield is a highly intelligent professor. He knows his politics and will use it in class. If you consider yourself a Republican, be prepared to be challenged on your thoughts. But if you're willing to see his viewpoints, he makes a wonderful professor. Have an open mind and do the work and you will pass with flying colors.

Prof. Butterfield is one of those that brings unmatched humor and enthusiasm to each class. There are many times I find myself cracking up and he always finds a way to pull me into the discussion and his stories. He doesn't just lecture, he encourages group participation. He is an excellent professor. His classes can change how you you think.

Best Gen Ed I've ever taken. A lot of work? Absolutely. Worth it? Absolutely. If you're looking for an easy class look elsewhere but if you're willing to take the time, this class can change how you think about not only reading but the world around you. My interest going in was minimal but with Butterfield I got something much better than expected.

Readings were short and easy and I'm a slow reader. 60-100 pages between Tu-Thur. Not hard to read a little each day. Had 5 exams but only one was graded. Had discussion question sheets to fill out. Do them in detail to get an A. 10 page paper, creative writing using the authors and characters from books. Great class. He's also a pushover.

I absolutely love Butterfield. Yes, you have to buy several books for his class, and there is a large amount of reading due for each class, but it is doable. You self grade yourself a lot, which is nice as long as you're honest. He is a very intelligent and hilarious man who really wants you to just learn and understand his concepts. TAKE HIM

Readings are mandatory. Journaling is expected for all readings. Class starts slow until you have 4 papers due in the span of 3 weeks. Gives you the entire class period to work on papers and sometimes cancels class to give you time. However, he doesn't give feedback on papers so you write all 4 not knowing if you should be changing anything.

Very outspoken with his own personal opinions and beliefs, which unfortunately can discourage you to express yours. Eight textbooks are required to buy for this class and the reading schedule is pretty intense. Was supposed to be self grading based on how you felt you read but instead started giving very specific pop quizzes the last weeks of class

Butterfield is one of my favorite professors I have had at UW-L. He is a professor that is not afraid to express his own opinion which I personally enjoyed. Discussions and lectures were very encouraging. You feel like you learned something important everytime you leave his class. Definitely would recommend to anyone that wants to gain knowledge.
