BLJ is a great teacher, and is an excellent help outside of class. He will literally sit with you for hours helping you with your assignments. The only downsides with him are: 1. he doesn't post his slides online, so its annoying if you lose papers easily or miss classes. and 2: HE DOESNT POST GRADES! He keeps you guessing! Otherwise, good!

All around, one of the most effective professors in the CS department. Knows his stuff, and (more importantly) knows exactly how to teach about it. Assignments are all relevant to teachings. Available to students and always helpful and nice about it. Students come out able to do, but also able to teach.

Excellent professor. The best I've had yet. He knows his stuff inside and out, has tons of experience, and is very detail oriented - a must for any CS professor. Will spend as much time as it takes with students to help them understand the material, and is very thorough in his explanations.

The programs are demanding, but if you took 515 you already know that. BLJ's door is always open and you can gain just as much knowledge stopping by there as you can in the class room (he will sit and debug with you for as long as it takes, and teach you valuable lessons as you go).

He is one of the most experienced professors I've ever had. Not only is he experienced in CS, but he knows how to teach the subject -- which isn't easy. He's always asking questions for discussion and to keep us on our toes. Attendance isn't mandatory grade-wise, but you don't want to miss class - the material is hard. Especially the later programs

BLJ wrote the CS curriculum, literally. After a recent downsizing of the department, he is perhaps the masthead of the CS boat. As to people saying "get a new OS, a new laptop" - Computer Science isn't what's hot at Best Buy. He wrote half the stuff running on that laptop. He's old school, teaches what's under the hood. What are you paying for?

Very enthusiastic, clear and direct answers to your questions. Amiable and very available. He is the definition of old school, very archaic. Don't ask how things are done now-a-days. Note, this is reviewing CS515 with C++.

Great prof., super clear, super helpful, if you ever have a problem just e-mail or talk to him after class, this man knows his stuff. He's got like 40+ years experience, so it's a given that he knows what he's talking about. Overall just great.

If you've programmed in any modern language before, prepare to be bored to tears for most of the semester. Also, his lectures consist almost entirely of reading from slides. Besides that, he's alright. You could do worse. Although I've gotta say, he uses an ancient laptop and a 7 year old version of Linux. You're a CS prof., get with the times!

great teacher! He does read of his slides a lot, and you won't be the only one falling asleep, but if you put some effort in staying awake, you will definitely get a lot out of these courses! And he gives everyone a chance, no matter if you programmed before or not! Also, he really knows his stuff!

He spent a lot of his time out of class to re-teach me the information, which saved me in this class. I would never have gotten through it (I had no programming experience before it) if he hadn't been so generous with his time. Really cares about the subject & students.
