Comment:
Class in itself isn't hard: 5 quizzes, 1 term paper (12-15 pages), and participation. To do well, you have to take time listening to the music and reading the books. McCann is a very knowledge and great professor. He brings in-class performances to supplement material.

had him for LAII and he's the best lecturer I've had so far. I had no knowledge of Latin America beforehand but learned a lot. Spring 2016 we had weekly quizzes on readings and lectures (actually very easy if you read/pay attn) and one 17-20+ pg paper due at the end of the year. sounds intimidating but he breaks up the steps and checks in as you go

McCann isn't a dry lecturer but he's not exactly captivating either. Nice man, loves the subject. Grade depends totally on TA and discussion really but don't skip lecture! Exam formats changed around several times (with warning), and he ended up not giving a midterm at all, just a final. Three papers.

This man knows everything about Latin America and is humble about it. Entertaining (and sometimes funny) lecturer, though difficult to follow - does not use a traditional lecture outline. Paper grades depend on your TA. Final is very specific, but straightforward. Go to lecture - it's only once a week!

This is the first time I have ever had a truly BAD Professor. McCann puts 0 effort into his lectures. Not structuring anything is an insult to students. He seems horribly full of himself. The class is not that hard, but I learned nothing and felt that I wasted a semester. There are so many great history classes, don't waste your time with this one!

McCann is a really great professor and is really really nice! One of the nicest professors I've ever had. But there is a TON of reading assigned!!!!!! His lectures are really interesting.

McCann is extremely knowledgeable and a really engaging lecturer. Grading is 100% based on your TA's easiness (unless you get McC), and lecture can be stressful as it's basically him talking at you with pics on the screen. I don't know how you could survive this class without going to lecture (as you cover 20+ years and two continents each day.)

one paper and one test in the last week of class makes up your entire grade. NO accountability so it's very easy to find yourself in a hole at the end of the semester. That said he's a very animated teacher and makes it interesting when he can

History of Brazilian/Cuban music was a brilliant class. 1 paper, 4 quizzes and a final paper. The quizzes are straightforward memorization but require you to work on them completely outside of class. Best part of the class is coming out with the appreciation you get for the music (Who doesn't love a good samba?).

Fantastic professor. I was in the LAS this year and McCann is terrific. Absolutely brilliant man and really knows how to engage you in the material. Actively encourages discussion and challenges your points to get you to think. Also really helpful with assignments in office hours. Highly recommend him and the Liberal Arts Seminar.

I took his class for a Gen. Ed. and accidentally fell in love with Latin America and learned a ton. McCann has one of those teaching styles that motivates you to dig deeper and guides discussion sections like a pro. Also just a generally great guy.

Loved him. So knowledgeable, a really interesting lecturer. Also, did not have unreasonable standards at all. Reading was really manageable. One of my favorite professors at Georgetown.

Makes obscure topics interesting. Good lecturer, really funny. A good TA is important for discussion and for grading. Two papers and one final; a lot of freedom for the papers. My favorite professor this semester.

Had no interest in Latin America prior to the class, but actually enjoyed it. Lectures were fast-paced but engaging. Discussion section is taught mostly by the TAs and grading is done mostly by the TAs, so easiness probably varies year to year. Prof was able to make the material interesting-- this is a good class to take to fulfill the core.

He is a very good lecturer. I actually felt that it was not necessary to do any of the readings as long as you attnded all of the lectures and discussions. Exams were esay, essays rquire mor work. It is best if you hand him a draft before it is due. Great Class!

Prof. McCann's lectures were usually interesting, though sometimes unorganized. He obviously has a great knowledge and love of Latin America. He approches discussion section in an differnt way, sometimes planning fun activities to spark discussion. The reading was heavy, but the 2 tests were easy and the 2 papers were managable.

For how long the lectures are (over an hour), McCann is a good lecturer. He loves Latin American music and sometimes incorporates it into lecture. Not too much reading, exams are easy, and essays are somewhat difficult if you don't put much time in them. Good class.

McCann is a very good professor, but his lectures can be pretty dry and boring. I had to force myself to go most of the time. Lots of assigned reading! Easy and clear-cut midterm and final. You have to invest a lot of effort into the two papers, though. McCann will let the class know that the papers are most important to him.

This guy is an amazing lecturer! Lots of reading for the class but it's all worth it. I ended up with an A- in his class and am very happy.
