He is a picky grader. Make sure you do all of the discussion although worth little points he tends to be a picky person with those comments. Papers aren't so bad have to turn in on both blackboard and turnitin. Requires a lot of blackboard participation. !!

Love his class. Keeps you interested about the topic, and is just funny in general. Class is not hard at all, as long as you pay attention. Goes off an a tangent now and again but there usually interesting to listen to.

One of the best teachers I've had at MTU, even at 8AM for 4 days a week during the Summer. Very thought provoking and talked about a lot of extra information that didn't exactly pertain to what we were learning, but it was still very interesting. I would recommend Prof. Dassbach to anybody taking Institutions at Tech. Plus, he's from Germany! =D

Awesome professor, very fun to listen to (even at 8 am class.) Outspoken, encourages discussion, and is a generous grader. Doesn't expect the world from you, and is willing to help. I would definitely recommend having him for any class.

Be prepared to take a lot of notes. He doesn't put questions on the exams directly related to the textbook, so you can get away with not purchasing it.

I have had Carl for 4 classes, and while they may not have been my easiest, they were definitely my most interesting. Some people complain about his rants, but I find them interesting. It's a matter of accepting that not everybody sees things the way you do, and listening anyway. You just might learn something.

Dassbach is ever the character. Basically, a bitter old man who never quite left the four-walled world of academia and is bent on teaching you the subject at hand, along with his own somewhat cynical view of American society. Very entertaining and thought-provoking, though his exams will definitely be challenging if you don't attend regularly.

Very opinionated, keeps classes interesting, but some people can't stand it and get upset because he will probably say something at some point to insult almost anyone. Self described socialist/anarchist, so it's sure to be interesting.

I had this teacher for two classes at once. Overall, he is a tough grader, which encourages you to show up for the classes (not attendance based though). This professor is absolutely brilliant in his area of study, but still understands cars, computers, etc. His lectures enlighten, challenge and educate. Perhaps one of the best instructors at Tech.

"Social sciences are value-laden." This is the first thing you learn. Yet, Professor Dassbach seems to think that his theories on American society are absolute. In fact, he grades his essays as such. However, he gives very interesting lectures. Textbook is very helpful. Talk to him during office hours.

Easiest class I ever took. Attended class maybe 1/3 of the time. He emails the lecture slides before the exams which you can easily cram the night before. Easiest A I ever got from a lecture class. Also, don't waste your time buying the books.

He is an alright teacher for institutions. He does have interesting views about america today that he talks about in his classes. Test are not easy but the final is made up of 25 of the same questions from the first to test you take. Have to do reading in the books to do well in the class.

very liberal, tests cover a lot that i felt werent thoroughly explained in class but still follow main concepts. likes to rant, especially about the university, pres of the university, and how messed up the U.S. is. pretty good prfoessor overall and enjoyable class if you can ignore his rants.

Sort of a socialist, goes on crazy rants during class. The tests are ridiculous, as in cover content not taught in class nor in the readings. Quoted saying that if students achieve over 70% on his tests he is not doing his job. Funny to listen to when he insults the president of the university.

in the words of dane cook: *insert crash sound* f**k this class!!! he is extremely liberal. can't STAND to keep his anti-american, un-christian views to himself for 2 seconds. we're supposed to learn about market, tradition and command. we only learn about it, through HIS view. i recommend touriniemi.
