Comment:
Take a class with him and get ready to make this class your entire life. He can be very rude with you if you don't give him what he wants, but he is very confusing when it comes to what he wants and getting help is difficult. If you're a film major, you may like him, but I was not thrilled.

Excellent teacher. Candid, but does it to better your writing, even if it kills your ego. Takes you seriously as a writer, so if you're not serious about your writing, don't take this class. Teaches structure and practicality in writing, something other profs don't stress. I'm learning a ton.

If he knows so much about good screenplays, why are his own so terrible, flawed and lackluster?

unless you have tons of time and can basically make his class your life, you won't get a good grade. class is repetitive and has no structure. his expectations are very unclear. unless you can spend several weeks of your life editing a documentary for him, you will regret taking his class.

Carl is a cool guy. If you hang around him too much he'll seem like a rerun, but when he says something inspired... it's well worth the wait. He knows what he's talking about and he's to be respected for teaching something he actually participated in. He gets an unfair rap for being stuck up, that's just his defense mechanism. Everyone knows how lifeless and soulsucking Hollywood is... he came out of it with some scars but with soul intact. Take him if given the chance... it's a blast.

Has very specific ideas of what makes a good story, and if yours doesn't fit into that box, the best you can do is a B. Does not try to help make your story better, but make it more like what he thinks it should be.

He's sort of self-important and stuck up at first, but you grow to love him as a bumbling, endearing man! The class was fun and informative, even for a Bio major :)

I am in love with this man. He's brilliant. He knows what college writing is garbage and he's not afraid to let people know. Don't take him if you write trash about college life. He'll let you know what most of us are thinking anyway. The best ever.
