Carlos is very dedicated and inspirational! I took his Spanish 6 class as a study abroad requirement and I was expecting a class on improving Spanish speaking, writing, and reading, but instead we learned a lot about Latin-American culture and history. I am very pleased with my advancement in the language through his course on culture.

If you like homework due every day, then this is the class for you! Expect a ton of homework that consists mostly of busy work to show that you read what was expected for you. I NEVER ONCE GOT AN ASSIGNMENT BACK so I had no idea what my grade was going to be, PLUS the final was 14 pages long and took some over three 3hrs to complete.

Carlos is truly one of the best professors I have ever had. To say he is intelligent and knowledgeable is to say the Atlantic ocean is damp. He is engaging and challenging, but simultaneously considerate and understanding. His classes are not easy, but you learn so much. I attribute my ability to speak Spanish to him. Seriously, take his class(es).

Calierno is one of my favorite professors that I've had at UCSC. He's incredibly enthusiastic/knowledgeable about what he teaches and his energy is infectious. He's not the easiest, but don't pass up an opportunity to take his class, you'll get a lot out of it AND have a lot of fun in the process. Highly recommended!

If you want an easy A don't take this class. Calierno kicks your ass but damn do you learn the language. He is funny, helpful, and hands down one of the best professors I've ever had here at UCSC. He really challenges you, but cheers you on the entire time & genuinely cares. Don't slack off. Don't NOT try. If you try you will love this class.

Carlos is one of my favorite teachers I've ever had in my college experience. He relates well with students and makes class fun by cracking jokes and being humorous. He is laid back and easy going but when it comes time to get serious and take the test you are prepared. Best Spanish teacher at UCSC!!!!!

A lot of work, really funny and sweet. Most of the tests were pretty easy but the final was hard. Doesn't pass back most homework assignments or essays.

Wow. Carlos really knows how to make you work, but you gain alot from it. He structures his classes more like a conversation between students and focuses alot on speaking skills. He calls on individual students, too, which can be nerve-wracking! Only downfall is he doesn't pass back homework, so you never know how you're performing in the class.

I had Carlos for Spanish five, and while at the time I didn't like his class, I learned A LOT. He explains everything in spanish, but when I went to spain for a year I could express complex thoughts all thanks to CARLOS

Carlos is super funny and class is always interesting, but he grades really hard, and it's easy to get lost. His description of grammar and verb tenses are confusing and do not line up with any textbook. You're completely dependent on the exercises completed in class to study for the tests/final, so all you can do is hope you answered them right!

Great professor! Always makes class interesting and fun. Although I feel in the last year he's lost a bit of the enthusiasm he is still a hard worker! He assigns a lot of reading from his reader and has hw assigned everyday. His tests are usually ok but for Spanish 4 the final was crazy long so study hard. Overall understanding & hard-working prof.

Great teacher!! I wish he taught all spanish levels. Never uses english, even to clarify, so make sure to ask questions. Also go to his office hours if you are not understanding something; he is super helpful and kind hearted. Assigns alot of work but it is usually relevant/interesting and his tests arnt too bad either. Take his class!

Excellent Teacher. Always hilarious and energetic. You learn spanish a lot faster in his classes due to the fact only spanish is spoken, except to define words or clarify concepts. One oral presentation - in his office or in front of the class. Hard Tests, Lots of HW and Participation. I would recommend taking these classes Pass/Fail.
