Students either mesh with Cathie's teaching style well, or they don't. Expect Cathie to demand your best at all times no matter what is going in your life. This course is hazing for the program. Professor Mercier is a difficult and unpleasant person. In dealing with her, I found myself feeling helpless and poorly advised. She is curt, thoughtless, and sometimes downright unkind. I found her unprofessional, mean-spirited, and arbitrary in her dealings with others. I would not recommend her or her classes to anyone.

She can be nice but she is not helpful. I really needed guidance and she provided none. After a minor disaster I asked her for more support and she just sent me on my way. I am a nearly straight A student and she screwed me over.

If I ha to choose a catalyst for the most severe bout depression, it was Professor Mercier. I was already depressed, but she made me become suicidal and drop out of Simmons. She was selfish, unhelpful, hurtful, judgmental, self-conscious and self-centered, and incompitant. She edited poorly, taught from a biased and reactionary perspective, and failed to teach anything thoroughly.

I really enjoyed our discussions and even the assignment. There was so much to be done, but at the end of the semester, I found myself thankful for her leading questions. She is truely the midwife of literature- everything id "Push" for a deeper explanation.

Cathie is the best teacher that I have ever had. She is intelligent, challenging, and always pushes the bounds of her own thinking and that of her students. She is very adept at encouraging excellent class discussion, and I always left class with a greater understanding of the topic.
