Comment:
In class explanations are insightful, and the lecture notes are very thorough. Notation can be confusing, but it's manageable. I would recommend this class. My major gripe with this class is the grading, the grading on reports is based more on writing style than code quality, which personally I didn't appreciate.

Data mining: Advertised as OK for anyone, but most quickly dropped. Need strong math/stats and programming to do projects, which are poorly written, confusing. R language is only taught in TA ofc hrs. Interesting lectures, useful in real world, but repetition of data in projects gets boring. Quiz 1st thing every day. He cares a lot about students.

This class is utterly tedious, boring, difficult, and the exam is very difficult and poorly representative of the material learned. Very vague instructions and a waste of Wednesday afternoons.

This must be one of the sharpest professor at CSE dept. The assignments are hard, as are the topics, and exams, but useful. I actually felt that I've learned something, not just absorbed required material. Exams are open book to help in case student forgets syntax or definition, which relieves from stress and often avoids "test anxiety". This helps

The labs were poorly put together. They should just rename this class "How to use Eclipse". The final had little to do with the what we'd been covering throughout the class. Altogether worthless.

Comment:
Final was pointless, he promised to curve, but he only curved the top 30 or 40% of the class. As for the rest, their grades are not curved. Cover pointless materials that you will probably not ever use in your life

The class is useless, and he lowered the class average by around 10% with a ridiculous final.

The professor is pretty okay. He is somewhat helpful and labs are doable. However the final is ridiculously hard and it is not really related to the material we learned. It is open book, no notes final but the book is useless and he only asked less then 20% of the questions in the book... And plus this class is just useless and is waste of the time.

Not bad for the first time teaching the course. His averages were slightly lower compared to Dahlstrom's (and the course was nearly identical). I don't know if the curve took that into account. Dropped an extra quiz because he misspoke. Left the review notes on the board during final (a mistake?)

I was expecting more from the class. He is oldschool with his methods and its very difficult to learn with his teaching style. He scribbles on the board even though he expects us not to write anything. If he was more clear and personable, students like me would be getting A's. He seems like a mean guy. Very very frustrating notes.

hard class but prof. elkan was very helpful during office hours. The projects were challenging but if you took the time to understand what the code and algorithms were doing the class was very rewarding and widely applicable.

Elkan was my favorite professor. He isn't as amusing as other people's favorites, but I learned so much more from him than the "fun" professors. He got me more excited about the subject and I really looked forward to his classes. I really liked that he tried to get the class involved.

projects are unclear and not ready. Some guidelines seemed open-ended but a day before the project was due, he states concrete stuff that we need to do. Very frustrating. Did not correct himself after complaints concerning project 1. However, his curve is very good.

Lectures were somewhat interesting (more due to the material than the teacher), but the assignments were very difficult and time consuming. There were sometimes discrepencies in the assignment specs which was frustrating.

Unrealistic expectations for group projects. Thinks it impossible for people to be able to work well together, won't allow for perfect scores in any of the grading categories of your peers.
