Gary is cool. He's a well-respected photographer who will give you good feedback on your work. If your work sucks, he'll tell you straight up that it sucks. He trips over something at least once every class period, which was always something to look forward to.

Comment:

I love Gary! he is super helpful but only if you ask!!!!! at first he can be a little intimidating but if you make an effort to get to know him and work with him you will get a lot more out of the class! Also, make sure that if you have questions about the assignments that you clarify it with him. He can be a tough grader at times but cares.

Comment:

Gary was one of my favorite professors this semester. Although his lectures during class could get lengthy and repetitive, he is one of the nicest professors I have come across thus far. He is relatable, hilarious, and wears cool socks. 10/10 highly recommend.

Comment:

If you aren't an aspiring photographer who already knows their way around a camera, this class won't do you much good. Gary assumes everyone already knows how to correctly use the camera and just assigns shooting projects without really going over how to properly take the pictures. We've had maybe one or two classes on how to actually take photos.

Gary's the best. He's my advisor & has been my professor every year. He jokes around half the time but most people don't realize it because he's pretty deadpan. If you show interest and at least try, he's on your side. Ask for help! He doesn't just hand it out. He also wants you to figure it out for yourself, learn the hard way&remember it better.

Not a very interesting professor, and at times it's difficult to understand what he's trying to say. His feedback on assignments is not very helpful, at least in class critiques. But despite that, his grading is always fair.

Gary is a great person. His teaching methods a bit dull and boring sometimes. If you do great and go beyond your assignment you will get a good grade. Asides for exams goes, he rarely goes over the exam. So your stuck reading several chapter without know specifically whats on the test.

Not a hard class. I got mostly A's on the assignments. What bothered me the most was his criticism is absolutely useless and nonconstructive. If you have a choice, take a different teacher for your shooting classes.

Gary was a terrible. I had him for all of Viscom. He played favorites, and if you weren't one of them, he singled you out for ridiculous reasons. Unorganized, lacked constructive criticism, and was a horrible academic advisor. It's hard to feel like you can succeed when your own advisor makes it clear he doesn't like you. I DO NOT recommend him!

Gary is great. I had him for a lot of my shooting classes at OU, both regular and independent study, and he was my advisor. He's not for everybody, but that's not entirely his fault. He wants you to work hard because he wants you to do well. He is challenging in a very constructive way. If you get to know him and work with him and show that you're serious, he's honest, fair, and helpful.

Unencouraging. It's his job, but Gary seems like he overly enjoys spouting off how he could've or would've done it better. Inconsistent grader. Boring class. The bar is set pretty low with assignments like shallow DOF and blur motion, but it's still crap in Gary's mind unless someone famous did it.

Outside of class I find Gary to be very interesting and helpful. The class atomosphere does change his attitude. If you give him**** he will respond with discontent. He will give an honest opinion and you may not like it, but keep a positive attitude.
