You'll work your ass off, and half the class will drop. But if you make it through the other side--you'll be glad you did.

I have never seen a professor that honestly thinks of himself as a deity, but there's always a first for everything. Dr. Ess is one of those teachers that expects you to put his class in front of anything you are doing, even your mother's funeral. This is the shortest straw for the draw in alpha. You will have hmwk on the first day of orientation.

Comment:
Dr. Ess may in fact think that he is God. He is inappropriate, unfair, and bias. I would not recommend him for an undergraduate level classes unless you are looking for the most challenging alpha seminar class offered at Drury. My absolute hate for him is irrelevant to his severe lack of clarity and overall teaching skills.

Dr. Ess changed my life. His lectures on philosophy opened new worlds and new ways of being. He is open to new ideas, as long as students think honestly through those ideas. If you are looking for an easy grade, or for someone who won't challenge you fundamentally--then you should not waste his time.

Terrible man with no integrity. Extremely biased and believes himself to be the most intelligent man in the world. He isnt. He uses class time as an expo to demonstrate how smart he is, using big words and complicated theories. I agree that if you repeat back to him what he says, you are more likely to impress him.And socks with sandals? good lord.

Good teacher. However, he is far too demanding for an undergraduate course. Regards PHIL as among the most difficult subjects. Do expect the class average to literally be 74%, not the modern standard of lower 80s%. Good man, incredibly tough (I think he likes that reputation though). If you want to do Masters level work in undergrad, take Ess.

VERY intelligent and a powerful presence in the classroom. Has a great sense of humor with my class and he is very quote worthy for facebook. One of the ebst classes at Drruy-definitely a must take! One warning though - do NOT take his papers lightly. They are the only bad downside - write long, thoughfully, and support everything in triplicate.

You will work for your A grade in this class but it will be worth it because he makes you learn. He is a great professor and one of the smartest people you will ever meet. Very clear with his teaching and probably the most interesting class I took. There's a fair amount of reading and discussion though but you will be smarter after having taking hi

I agree with the respect quote. Man of honor. Has lots of integrity and very respectfull. Good teacher who you'll learn a lot. I just wish he could set up a class with a more "balanced" slant on things. He dosen't really try to be biased but can still be.

Worst class experience I ever had. Tried to use circular reasoning in a Logic course, for goodness sakes. I only rate him as pretty easy because all we had to do is repeat his own opinions back to him to get a good grade.
