Taught me more about how to learn and advocate for myself and others than anyone. Great and inspiring professor with an odd sense of humor (that I loved)!

Chuck is brilliant and uses it to explain confusing concepts in seminars and lectures alike. He worked tirelessly in seminar to explain difficult concepts in as many ways as possible until understood. He has little patience for laziness, and will express that by way of appearing disinterested in the person. He is worth getting to know well.

I wouldn't suggest taking a program with him. Took two quarters with him last year and everyone had their heads on the table by the end of his lectures. He's been teaching too long and just doesn't seemed excited about anything he teaches. Nice guy, just burnt out. Also, he claimed he was retiring last year but is still teaching.

If you are into reading the texts he is your man. One of the few actual philosophers at TESC. He is old school. He seems open minded and even humble despite his rep. I enjoyed his lectures. Philosophy of science is not his expertise. Anything to do with history of philos, theory of mind, aesthetics/music--good to go. He is experienced!

Mr. Pailthorp knows very little, actually, about English literature, at least the modern stuff. He doesn't know, for instance, who Raymond Carver is -- the most famous writer from Washington, bar none, and hugely influential. Mr. Pailthorp seemed careless; only wanted summer $. Waste of time & dough.

I've taken four philosophy classes with Chuck; he's smart and knowledgable, and one of my favorite professors at TESC. But he can be a tad unavailable. Still, I'm tempted to think that his bad ratings here are from people who wanted their hands held--if you work hard at the material, you're sure to get a good eval.

Charles Pailthorp was definately not one of the greatest professors. I agree and there is no reason to even fake what I think to him and even pretend to kiss his ass. He obviously is too busy with HBO and his children/past students to genuinely care for his students. I'm aware of his intelligence.I do hope in the future he will live up to his past,

Chuck is one of those people who is so smart that you really feel awkward around. Taking his class led me to really understanding his view-points. He expects greateness from students, but hes not a babysitter. Chuck is a very intelligent man.

Other students who have rated Chuck on this site are simply wrong. Chuck is the kind of teacher who engages all his students, wants them to succeed, and will do anything he can for them. Sometimes he'll invite you to his house for dinner to discuss how you and he can make class better; while you're there, you'll play games with him and his boy.

What a joke. Chuck is just showing up to collect a paycheck. He is out of touch with his students and doesn't really teach you anything to speak of. What a waste of 1500 bucks.

By far the worst teacher I've had at Evergreen so far. Most of the discussions were made through the classes online chat room, which Chuck loves. Subject matter was always unclear. Basically it was a teach yourself type of class. Couldn't really care less about his students. He didn't even get a sub to cover for him when he missed a week of class.

He should retire immediatly. I bet he used to be a good teacher, but his heart and mind have left the room. If you're reading this Chuck, nothing personal but my education means more to me than what you had to offer.

Chuck's goal wasn't so much to teach from the top down, but rather to encourage his students to break their own grounds of thought. I thought he was a great help in that regard, and he wound up being a great source of encouragement for me. Great dude.

Chuck seemed like a decent teacher throughout the quarter, but when it was time for evals, he docked 4 credits (even though i asked him 2 weeks before hand if everything was ok, and he said it was all good) because i did 20 less volunterr hours than i should have (i know someone else who got all cre

Though Chuck can be great when he talks about something he's passionate about, his lectures are often very hard to listen to. He often doesn't seem very friendly. But I think, in a different class, he could really be pretty incredible.
