Comments from a Student of the Class of 1995: A brilliant, but somewhat enigmatic prof. who is rewarding to those who actually put considerable effort into attempting understanding the works of lit. that he teaches. He is deserving of all the posted compliments, and the less than favorable rmks have come from those who just don't seem to get him.

The epitome of the out of touch pompous left wing political science professor. He is one of the key reasons I began hating poli-sci. This guy will make outragous statements (very antiAmerica/military) and then when called on it will only speak to you after class to try to excuse his comments. Will not address them publicly as to not damage his ego

I did not enjoy Tarlton's class at all. His TAs did 90% of the lecturing and it seemed that all the information asked for on the exams was on something not covered in class.

I am NOT into theory, took course during summer (b/c it's required) and let me tell you - its the way to go! Supposed to start at 8, Tarlton changed it to 9 (but we didn't have to stay later!), classes were challenging but it's the material, not him that makes it hard. he actually made it understandable - and he kept it interesting!

My first poly sci course when I was a freshman, this class should have told me to major in something different but I was stupid heh. Alot of detailed reading required for a course of this level, I must have read "The Prince" twice through, and his bung-hole TA's still ripped my papers to shreds.

This is probably the best Professor that I have had here at Albany. I learned more in one semester in his class than I have in the rest of my time in the business school. Easy grader, but the portfolio project is pretty long.

lecture was at 845 in the morning, its over an hour long, and its hard to pay attention. You have to write down everything he says because the final is all about the lecture. Papers were ok, but took a little while to figure out what to write. You have to take it, so make the best of it. make sure you go to class.

Tarlton's lectures are self-indulgent ramblings. He loves students who stroke his over weening ego and ignores everyone else. TAs are pretty useless and all of them, including Tarlton, have a lot of difficulty breaking the text down conceptually.

He's a brilliant man, even if liberal. But he speaks in abstract language, I'm lucky I had such a great T.A. If you're a political science major, you have no choice but to take this, but if not, I wouldn't recommend it.

This man is the most pompous jerk I have ever encountered. I have never been more bored in a clas listening to this hippie describe his acid trips at Berkeley. Worst class ever.

Another great class. If you do the reading and go to class it's an easy A. He explains what you need to know, and if you put in a little effort, its no big deal. I even missed a LOT of class and still got an A.

You definitely have to read to get by in this class, but if you do, it really is rewarding. Tarlton has an interesting view on politics and on life in general. He teaches a very interesting class.

Tarlton is the man!!! I switched my concentration over to political theory after taking 103. This guy will make you think more than any other professor you will ever have. In addition to this, he has the best stories you will ever hear from a professor. If George Carlon was a college professor, he'd be Charles Tarlton.

5 books. 3 out of 4 lectures given by T.A.s Supposed to have 5 tests, but cut to 3 cause of snow days. Gave lots of extra credit for attendance. Nice, polite man if you aren't cocky. Did acid in the 60s so sometimes his lectures go all over the place, but overall a good professor and a good class.
