Comment:

One of the best professors I had ever had. Inspirational and very passionate. Grading was tough and assignments were tough... I didn't do very well early on. But I eventually excelled after I adopted his method. I still have the handouts and binders although I graduated years ago.

Comment:

Many people warn against him because he is a tough grader, but he is there to see students succeed and has a true educator's approach to his courses. Learned a lot. After all- if there is no challenge, is there really any learning?

There are a lot of people who don't like Dr. Young, and I can understand how he might rub people the wrong way. He sometimes has a "my way or the highway" approach to things, but if there's an idea you're really passionate about, he's willing to work on it with you. Keep a mind open to improvement and learning and you'll get along just fine.

Confusing, unhelpful, teaches fixed do (which will not be helpful to me in the future), his teaching method is hard to understand, you have to use his handouts. I had much better theory before coming to uwsp, don't expect to learn theory here.

I find him very rude and disrespectful towards students. If you don't do things his way, he wont even help you get in the right direction. Personally, he singles out students too, and won't even take the time to help them out. It seems as though a student has to suck-up to him, otherwise you'll never make it in his class.

What an unprofessional man. I cannot believe the university finds value in his teaching. Besides the point, if you want an A in his class, get ready to kiss his butt and pretend that you find value in his words. Very, very disrespectful to his students.

Dr Young is very passionate about what he does. Composition with him can be scary - he sort of tosses you in towards the end of the semester & waits for you to learn to swim. Will always help if you ask for it, though you might not always feel like it's help at the time. Raises legit points about music, & can really make you think.

I agree that Dr. Young is a very smart and dedicated man, but I don't agree with his teaching methods. How can he tell if I'm 'visualizing the keyboard' just by looking at me? If you don't think of things the way he does, you're wrong(even if you're technically still using a correct method). Also hate that he uses humiliation as a motivation tactic

His theory to force FIXED DO is absolutely an injustice to the University. We are a music ed training facility for the most part, and to teach us a system that isn't useful in our country or for our future students is ARROGANT of him. I've been dissappointed in my studies with him... he needs to think more about our future students than himself.

All he does is quote other people to sound smart. He isn't afraid to preach politics to his students and you MUST be at class all of the time, even though it obviously isn't necessary unless you want to hear more quotes. A large part of your grade is based on attendance and that's why I had to drop.

Dr. Young will give every class he begins each semester an article on arrogance and humility for the sole purpose of excusing his own arrogance. If you worship him, you will be rewarded with an A. If not, or you are smart enough to realize his bullcrap, you will be punished. If you question his methods, he will push you aside without debate.

379, 479, 410-If you buy into his philosophy (really more of a cult), he'll treat you like gold. If however you're smarter than he is, you'll suffer his (blatant) disrespect. For Young, his way is THE way, and everything else is obsolete. As a composer myself, I can't stress how useless all three of these courses are. Avoid 410 if you can.

Sai Young is one nutty guy. He follows what he teaches with good effects. Yeah, he does teach some loftier concepts in theory about music's mission and some people could get lost, but he raises questions that should be pondered in a music institute.
