He's a skilled painter in his own right, but is very contradictory and talks crap about the art world, past students, his colleagues, and the school. He teaches you to paint by shapes, but if you are beyond intermediate don't bother. If you have experience painting I wouldn't bother. He also doesn't teach you any watercolour techniques.

Tan is the best instructor that you'll experience at OCAD. He's a professional and knows what he's talking about. His critiques are never irrelevant or personal. He really wants to help everyone be a better painter. I highly recommend taking his class if you're capable of letting go of your habits and embracing his methods.

the first two class is helpful to learn how to paint with watercolor if u have no idea... but other than that, he's rude and bias. if u can handle that, go ahead, take his class. Even if u do that, he'd hate your painting.

His personality is blunt but hes a very kind teacher to his students, he is the only teacher that will actually teach u how to paint, classes are comfortable. He doesnt pressure u & is open minded. Dont be intimidated when u first see him, the more classes u have the better it gets, he can help u significantly in water colour. Hes a great teacher

Great man. Reminds you why you paint. Necessary to have, even if you think you will hate him. Other comments are somewhat true, but the man is an EXCEPTIONAL artist, like him or not some of what he says is undeniably true. Pick and choose what you take out of the class and you will learn.
