Doesn't take attendance but you should go to class to take notes, they come in handy for the quizzes and exams. I found going to class I understood more. She definitely knows what she teaches and she makes it interesting. Gives 50 extra points for going to study sessions. Definitely should take her!

class is hard but the lectures are very interesting and she gives out bonus points for going to SI sessions which are actually super helpful for tests but be sure to read the book because that's just as necessary as going to class

If you go to class and take notes, read the source book readings, and take advantage of the bonus points, you should totally be fine. To get a better understanding of the readings, go see her/the TAs/ the SI instructor. Keep up with the weekly readings or you will have to cram before the exam.

overall, she was a very good professor. lectures were packed with notes but she told the material in a good way. enjoyed her lectures but all her tests were essay tests. gives extra credit which helped a lot. grading on tests was kind of hard but if you read it was easier. final exam was hardest of all my classes, same format as tests.

Lectures are easy to understand and to the point. No homework other than light reading. Quizes are easy if you pay attention in class and take some time to study. Tests are short essays about the readings, the SI prepares you well for them. Extra credit opportunities all semester.

The test for this course are essay format but are incredibly easy as long as you do the study guides. There are also essays on books but they're on those time periods so you don't have to read to in-depth. She takes roll but it's not counted for anything. If you're sick and can't turn a paper in she will let you email it to her with a doctor's note

Kooi is one of the most interesting professors I have had so far. Going to class is very important because all of the information she covers could show up on the quizzes. Take good notes. Also offered 50 extra credit pts. Tests are difficult if you do like me and studied the last minute. Go to class and keep up the readings and you will have an A.

I've never gotten a B in a history class until now. This class is tougher than your usual 1001 class, so expect to put in effort to pass. All of your tests are essays, so make sure you have a basic understanding of the sources. The quizzes are fairly easy, just make sure to brush up on your notes beforehand. GO TO CLASS OR YOU WILL NOT PASS.

I loved her, but I am interested in history. I never really went to class, but I finished with an A. The class is out of 500 points so every test and quiz counts. Not hard if you try. She explains everything clearly in her lectures also! I'm taking her later on.

Make sure to read the sourcebook readings. All exams are made up of 3 essays from 6 different sources in the textbook. Honestly just takes notes, try not to miss to many classes, pay attention to the lectures, study often and read all assigned sourcebook readings and you will pass the class guaranteed.

I usually like learning about Western civilization but this class was really boring. You have to go to every class and take really good notes or else you probably won't pass. There are quizzes every 2 weeks that are really difficult. Tests require you to write essays about sourcebook readings. She does give you the opportunity bonus points

She is a little monotone, but overall a very helpful and interesting teacher. She is very knowledgeable about Renaissance, and the class discussions about the books are a lot of fun. She is very clear with grading of the material, and does look at grammar of papers but if you've taken Engl 1001 you'll do fine. Overall, I really enjoyed this class.

I had this woman for Renaissance History and I am in LOVE with the Renaissance. She knew nothing. She taught the entire class from the Medieval perspective. Facts were totally wrong. Must read seven books and write papers on two. Grades worse than an English professor with grammar. DO NOT TAKE HER IF YOU LIKE HISTORY! She'll make you hate it.

Her quizzes were easy, if you went to class you should know the answers (multiple choice) Her tests were easy as well if you did the reading. She gives you the exact format for her tests, so you should pretty much know what will be on the exam beforehand. Class was interesting.

Great teacher. I went to most classes, but didn't do too much reading. Take notes, keep with the lecture, and do a cursory reading of the material and you are good to go for the tests. I remember minimal studying, but she is really awesome at this class.

Prof. Kooi was a great prof who managed to make the Dutch interesting. I wasn't looking forward to her Dutch Republic class but was very glad I ended up taking it. If people say she is boring, it's probably b/c they weren't paying attention, or they just don't get it.

Absolutely boring. Test were nearly impossible. Read these three sentences and tell me who wrote the work and it's title, along with what this meant for the world in it's exact time period. I'd say half of the original class completed it, if that.
