This class is very manageable over j-term. There are readings, exams over the readings you get to take twice, lecture exams, short primary source essays, and discussions. You will really learn to analyze history critically. Even if you aren't a history buff, you will gain much from Dr. Manning, and you'll have to work hard but he'll help a lot.

No exams so that's great. Group presentation where creativity matters. Historiography - as what it is early. Weekly online quizzes with retakes - grade buffer. Easy class, but I just thought his requirements for the paper were annoying? The outline is pretty much the paper so it saves time later on, but the outline is long and hard. Chill guy

Knowledgable, but not a great professor. You can have a Ph. D and not know how to teach. Nit-picky about unnecessary things. Received a 5% reduction on paper grading for going over word count by ONE brief paragraph. 2 Lecture exams every week, 2 chapter exams on textbook every week, 3 book reviews for entire class, online discussion on Sakai.

I took this class during the summer. There is a lot of reading, however I really enjoyed it (and I'm NOT a history major) ! 3 short papers, online tests for each chapter you read, and short quizzes on the lectures. Only thing I disliked: he took forever to respond to emails.

Manning is a fascinating lecturer- the topics are interesting and very thought provoking. Expect to participate at least once a class period, and DON'T PROCRASTINATE ON THE HUGE PAPER. He tells us he'll hold our hand the whole way but expects a lot of us when we're asked to perform- which is very true. Kind guy- awesome to befriend, but tough.

Dr. Manning is great. The tests are all online and you have two chances to take them each. Other grades are from participation, 1 presentation, and a huge final paper. He organizes the paper into chunks to help you write well and manage the workload. I don't like history but thought every lecture was captivating, informative, and thought provoking.

You have to read in the textbook and do online quiz things. Other than that, the only grades are parts of the final essay to be turned in beforehand and participation, which is SUPER IMPORTANT. Don't take if you don't want to be actively involved in understanding history. But his lectures are interesting and he's very personal. Suave and classy guy

Amazing teacher. He is passionate about making his students better people. I took this class to fill core and now wish that I had more time left in my undergrad to take more of his classes.

LOVE HIM! Really the best honors class. We had weekly online quizzes over the history book which wasn't the best. But besides that, he doesn't believe in tests so there is no midterm or final. Lots of reading but can definitely get by without doing it all. He's super funny and laid back. Definitely recommend.

A LOT of work. interesting but VERY time consuming. Great if you are history major or into the subject matter but bad when this is an elective course one of the few offered online your last semester bc loyola decided you needed a few more credits.

AMAZING TEACHER. All you have to do is show up, participate and do the out of class homework online. NO midterm NO final. Only 3 papers spaced out evenly throughout the semester. NO in-Class exams. The only exams are every other week that are online and you can do at home. Great guy, wants the best for you and loves what he's teaching. TAKE MANNING

This is the hardest class I have ever taken. I have severe ADHD and the professor is very cold and expects a lot out of you. I am a transfer student this semester and I am seriously considering leaving this school because of this class. It is too difficult and demanding, not to mention the course load is the equivalent for 3 classes.

Funny and quirky but treated us like professionals. Generally enjoyed class but he seemed a little preoccupied with other endeavors, may account for the length of time it took to get grades. Also appreciated his candor regarding academia.

Unless you have 12+ hours a week to dedicate to homework avoid this class at all cost! His syllabus is difficult to understand and the workload is not aligned with the Adult Education format. I can say that I know nothing more about American History than when I started the course. This is due to stress associated with keeping up with the workload.

While I was taking this class, I absolutely hated it. But now that I'm finished, I realized how much I learned throughout the semester. Definitely worth taking. Just make sure that you participate in class constantly, or you're unlikely to get much higher than a B.
