Comment:
I took Putney's classes on Gogol, Dostoevsky, and Tolstoy (and one called "Dandies and Dead Souls") during my time at UNC. He is phenomenal in every way, shape and form. The man is also a genuine riot and his lectures were as entertaining as they were knowledgeable.

An amazing, inspiring professor. He's ridiculously funny and has the rarest of all gifts: capturing and holding the attention of even the sleepiest of students. Case in point, he made Chernyshevsky seem interesting (okay, he made it bearable). But caveat lector: his passion for literature is seriously CONTAGIOUS and cannot be inoculated against

Comment:
Putney was extremely knowledgeable about the subject matter (Gogol, in this case) but definitely welcomed other interpretations from students. As long as you've done the readings (both primary and critical) class discussions are a breeze. I would agree that he expects much more effort for papers, though.

Great professor: minimal workload, and he's passionate about the subject matter. Odd sense of humor that not everyone would like, but overall an enjoyable prof.

Comment:
Condescending professor who doesn't give students much credit for intelligence. Discussions are surface and boring because he has a "right answer" in mind. Doesn't seem to care about teaching and cancels classes because he's "too busy." Others may like his humor and minimal workload, but this does not make a good professor.

Easy class counts for Non-Western AND cultural perspective and no recitation. Putney is cool. Get to watch a lot of movies. Do the study guides and you'll do fine on the test.
