Comment:
Very unreasonable and not at all helpful. Does not give good feedback and makes only 4 grades count for the entire semester. I got A's in all of my other classes but worked just as hard in this class and received a B-. His class might be interesting but he is a nightmare to work with. Do not take his classes.

I really enjoyed this class and the material we learned about. Smit was intimidating at first but he is really cool and funny. If you pay attention and go to class you will do great in the class.

He makes you read his book that is paperback and falls apart within one short read, and it costs over $30.

This class would be really worthwhile if he put in as much effort as he expects from his students, especially considering that this is 100-level class. I'm all for challenging students, but his expectations were neither clear nor reasonable.

The comment below mine is correct. He might seem intimidating at the first two weeks, but his classes aren't that scary. Just make sure you spend a lot of time on your papers and see him for help if possible. Midterm and final exam weren't that hard at all. You learn a lot in his class.

He seems to count participation a lot, but in the end, i don't think it matters that much. He sounds very strict and hard at first, but he's not so bad. Need to take good notes in class!!

I have taken four classes with this professor. Dr. Smit is extremely intelligent and knows his field. He expects the very best from his students, which is why many students aren't happy with the way he grades. However, he is always willing to help and sometimes (if you're lucky), he will let you rewrite a paper for a better grade. Take him!

Absolutely hilarious. Def. a Prof that you could hang out with outside of the classroom. He is passionate and knows his stuff. He is a tough grader, but that is only because he expects our best. def take him if you get the chance, you wont regret it.

Best prof. at Calvin. Loves the material, makes class fun, and gets you thinking. Plus, the guy knows the plot (and half the lines) of every movie made in the last 40 years! If you get an opportunity to take one of Dr. Smit's classes, do it!

I like him and his class bunches, BUT one time I got a grade way lower than it should have been because I forgot to mark attendance all year. Attendance should not be kept track of IMO.

Class lectures were extremely interesting, info very applicable. Smit is a good person, an engaging lecturer, allows the class to take control of class conversations. Only complaint is that he sometimes comes off as cynical.

One of my favorite profs - he made material I wasn't initially interested in a lot of fun. Likes participation, which can be tough early in the morning. I like his sense of humor too.

Professor Smit is hilarious. But he is also wise and knolwedgable. I have never known a teacher who has such concern for his students and love for his subject. My only disappointment is that all my professors aren't as great as he is.
