Comment:
Chuck's classes are easy to do well in, so long as you do all of the work. He won't babysit you or hold your hand, but if you pay attention to the nuggets of wisdom that he casually drops in class and conversation, you'll undoubtedly grow as a writer. Chuck is cool and casual so it's easy to dismiss him, but pay attention and you'll be inspired.

I came into the program expecting to grow as a writer. The growth happened because of my own inquiry and practice outside of this class and away from this professor. He spent most of his time reading his own work aloud and bragging about himself with his feet up on the desk. It was an expensive joke. Community college was better.

Rosenthal is easy-going, funny, and very nice. It make seem at first like he's going to be a pretty difficult teacher, but quickly you will realize he honestly cares about the students and wants the class to learn and enjoy the subject, rather than be quizzed and graded harshly. There was no final when I took the class.

I paid thousands of dollars to take this class. He spent a lot of time complaining about his lot in life (poor guy -- full time writing professor, works three days a week and makes a damn good living). I wasn't clear what he wanted from me, and got no feedback that helped at ALL. Should have gone to a writers group and saved the $$$$$$.

If you can get him off himself and filter half of what he says--you might learn something. One of the most knowledgable about literature, undoubtedly, but like most big fish doesn't rise to take the fly unless given a good kick in the a**. Class "I could have been a contender" case.

Before I spend the rest of this box on how great Chuck is a couple things on the comment before this. Even if his new book was discontinued at BN that doesn't change the fact that he has 7 books in print and circulation right now. Most of those great ameri

This class wasn't very good. I thought the teacher was too hung up on his own work (which I believe has been discontinued at B&N) and was very negative about some of the best American writers. Also, gives letter grades with no feedback.

This is an ADVANCED fiction class! Not first grade eng. From the moment i entered that class to the end of the semester there really wasn't anything constructive about the class and i didn't really learn anything. There wasn't encouraged class discussion either. It's supposed to be a workshop but there wasn't anything to help a writer grow.

Listen, if you're anal and you need a teacher to spell things out for you, don't take Chuck. However, if you can be laid back and can have a teacher who can be the same, take this man's class (no matter what it is). He is amazing and he can help you become a better writer.

He never made it quite clear what he expected. Class was fun, but not particularly energizing for my writing. He hit me with a whammy at the end. Grade suffered some because I didn't do what I didn't know he wanted me to do.

A man who would not teach you if he didn't have to pay bills. A man who loves to write and live. You are lucky to be alive at the same time as him, and even luckier to have the opportunity to learn from him. Epitome of rugged chill.

Rosenthal is fiction; his true-to-life stories give a rooting context to the craft of writing. Initially he may seem void of actual English knowledge and more of a beatnik turned prof but as time goes on you see this man knows everything about the written word.

I took 3 classes from him over 10 years ago and he still ranks as one of the best writing teachers I've ever had. He's why I switched my major to English.
