He considers himself a "woke" art professor, but he insulted performance art and contemporary art to a class full of current art majors so maybe he should consider not teaching in a contemporary art school... he's too old-fashioned to be teaching now. You don't learn information relevant to the current art world at all...

Welter genuinely wants to see his students succeed. The class is an easy A -- show up, do the work on time, take an interest. Like with most classes, the value lies in what you are willing to invest.

The only times I ever saw him were critiques. He would go two to three weeks at a time without ever making an appearance in class and was condescending and disrespectful when he did. Felt little to no investment from him in the success of his students. Really disappointing class.

This class was such a waste of time, Cole obviously likes what he does but the lectures are so long and boring and really seem to be going nowhere in particular. The good thing is you don't have to show up to do well.

He is a very laid back professor who couldn't care less about attendance. All his powerpoints are online so you honestly don't have to show up. All assignments are fairly easy and he's an easy grader. He gets lost in his lectures sometimes, but he's a sweet man who is insanely passionate about art.

He never takes attendance and sometimes the class can be boring, but the material you learn WILL benefit you in the real world. If you're an art major you most likely have to take it so Cole is the best option. He knows what he is talking about from experience. Do the discussions, go to test review days and you WILL be fine. Seriously.

I really enjoyed this class! Yes it can be a bit boring at times but most of the time the material we learn about is interesting. He's a really cool teacher and is really wants his students to learn something new. The midterm and final are taken through blackboard (open note) & you do have discussion board topics to comment on for your grade.

I had him for 3 classes this semester and signed up to have him again next semester. He clearly shows great interest in painting. He really tried to help his students find their artistic voices. The only bad thing that I can think of is that he does tend to go off on tangets but they are interesting so it's ok.

Cole changed my life. He is an inspiring and gifted instructor in the painting studio. I am now a couple years out of grad school, and not a day goes by that I don't use/think of something he taught me. He's a gift to those lucky enough to study with him. Thank you Cole!!!

Cole is a pretty nice guy. His class is easy if you do what's asked of you (which isn't much). He is very strict on attendance and makes you wear a name tag. I usually didn't put mine on to prevent from being called on. Class is pretty boring but he's nice and assignments are easy.

Cole has a vast knowledge of different artists, but can be very close-minded when it comes to your personal painting preference. He prefers abstract to other forms, and "doesn't like to give As" in his class. His lectures also often trail off into rants that last all class that end up having nothing to do with his original point.

Makes a boring class even more so. Clear requirements that are easy to meet, mandatory (and obsessively checked) attendance, class contains some helpful career-related stuff, but mostly...yawn. Sit in the middle/back of this packed class and bring some good reading. It's an easy A if you just do the required stuff, which isn't hard.

cole has a wealth of knowledge and is always open to sharing it. he knows so much about painting and artists, and love when you talk to him and are interested in looking at his books. go to class, and paint and your sure to get an A or B. he just wants to see improvement. i didnt go to class much, so i didnt do to well. attendance is key!

He is NOT a good studio prof. Extremely mean about his critiques on students work. All projects he assigned, i don't think he actually tried any of them himself. He assigns unclear art projects that don't really teach anything he tries to talk about in class. he also made some pretty offensive comments. AVOID

Comment:

Cole is an alright professor. We basically go over powerpoint in class and his exams are pretty straightforward (plus they are open book and open note). This class is really helpful for future artists. It basically is what the title says: Foundations Seminar...you really get the foundations of art such as critiques, profolios, how to's...et cetera.
