I had professor Harsh for modernity and I am warning you. DO NOT TAKE HER. She will rip your paper to shreds and tests you on things never mentioned in class. The class is pointless and we rarely talked about the readings. However, she expects you to know every detail for the test. Impossible to get a B in a required class. DO NOT TAKE.

Comment:

Innocence and Experience was an excellent course. Very small class and discussion based, so you can't really get away with not doing the readings. Mostly novels and poems though, so it's not hard to get done. Very knowledgeable professor, hard grader, and has a wry sense of humor. Discussions yielding a lot of genuine learning and discovery.

Professor Harsh is a very good teacher totally familiar with her literature. She leads discussions well, mediating between the ideas of all of the students and the direction of the class. She can be a little dry at times, which gets lost in the early morning classes, but she is very funny and nice.

Discussion based. Open to other ideas,but does have her own opinions and ideas she will want to pursue. Two 7-8 page papers, midterm, and final. No surprises, fairly graded. She is an English professor, watch conventions. Ok, would take again for modernity. Reading for general ideas is important, but don't spend hours on it.

Interesting professor, but boring papers, and silly grading. Kept me stuck at a 92 for everything: papers and tests: because she "thought you were capable of better." It's a freaking requirement, I want minimum work. I hated that she didn't allow me to skip class. This is college, I should be able to take the day off to read T.S.Eliot if I want.

Harsh is a really interesting professor. she is a fairly hard grader but if you do all the readings and study for the midterm and final you'll do fine. she made some really boring readings interesting. Definitely reccommend her for modernity

I loved her innocence and experience class, but don't take it if you're not into discussions. Every class is all about discussions on the literature (which is all really enjoyable). She's a great teacher, but a hard grader.

We had to arrange the desks in the class into a semi-circle every day for discussion, which pretty much defines the class. Professor Harsh is great at getting a class discussion going and proposing interesting topics. She's really passionate and knows a lot. Very tough grader. Easy enough to get by with a B, A's tough to come by.

Prof Harsh is does grade very subjectively and unless you regurgitate what she has said in class she doesnt like your work. We wrote a paper on the Secret Sharer in my class, a book I had analyzed extensively in AP English in high school and when I wrote several things in my paper that she had not mentioned in class she accused me of cheating.

Her class was always interesting and the time flew by, very good at leading discussions and it never dragged. She also has a great sense of humor and can be hilarious. Definitely a very hard paper grader but the midterm and final weren't too bad. You'll work hard but enjoy the class.

She's very unapproachable and seems cold at times. Bad essay topics, seems condescending, tough grader. Doesn't know what constructive criticism is, only mentions the negative. Good texts, interesting discussions, but she kills you on the papers and tests. Ok at times, but overall not very good.
