I'm really not sure how this guy got tenure (sarcasm font). My class was in 1987. Nearly 30 years later nothing changed. Boring lectures. Random pop quizzes. Ultra-slow grading. Little leniency for athletes missing class. I remember thinking that I was spending $2000 on that class. Now it's $8000. Waste of time and money. Don't do it.

DO NOT TAKE A CLASS FROM HIM. He just assigned our class a 3 page paper on a book we didn't read the weekend before finals and it's due in 3 days. His lectures are boring, his grading is useless, we have had 3 grades all semester, and his lectures make 0 sense. He is a smart man, but he is not meant to be a teacher. Avoid him at all costs!!!

Please don't take a course from him. I thought I would give him a chance aside from all of the reviews, and I was wrong. Unclear, unintelligible, and unequivocally judgmental. Quick to assume, too. Use your time at Colgate more wisely than suffering through a course with him.

I looked at these reviews and totally underestimated how awful this guy really was. His lectures, while funny, are the ramblings of an overeducated, bitter, Afrocentric narcoleptic professor. I went to office hours for help and was turned away after one sentence. I have a final tomorrow and have gotten 1 paper back out of the 3 ive submitted.

Grades papers and tests pretty easily but his lectures make absolutely no sense. I've never found the discussions to be very enlightening, but he's a funny guy and as long as you've done the reading (which is a lot) you can get by pretty easily.

Just a note for all those who commented on Prof. Richards' falling asleep in class--he's got narcolepsy. Not a joke. So if anyone's using this to judge whether to take his classes, just keep that in mind--it's not his fault. As far as I know, he's on meds that help him a lot more now.

A pretty bad teacher. Yes, he is extremely smart, but he doesn't use his smarts to stimulate the class or lead good discussions. Rather, he just drones on randomly choosing people to answer questions. Assigns hundreds of pages of readings on extremely hard topics, yet doesnt expect people to do it.

Extremely knowledgable and humerous in class. Slightly disorganized and distant, but all in all for someone who had very little interest in the class, I actually enjoyed it. Grading was leniant. It was definetly an interesting semester in so many ways.

He really knows what he is talking about. He's also very funny in class. Although he tends to forget names and doze off at times, he's still one of the nicest professors I've ever had at colgate. Listen carefully to what he is saying and ask questions.

You can tell he know what he is talking about, but he loses his train of thought a lot. It is sometime hard to understand the point that he is trying to make. He seems to like to pull random things out on his test to see if you are paying attention.
