Many people here are bashing Dr. Hoag because they didn't do well in the class, but I promise if you do the reading, pay attention in lecture, and go to him with questions you have, you'll do fine.

Lecture grade based only on exams. Teaching style is basically writing problems on the board without really explaining them or giving any background on the topic. I felt like I had to teach myself the material using textbooks. The class material isn't hard, but the way he teaches makes it hard. Have to put in A LOT of outside work to perform well.

Worst teacher at this school. I took an introductory level chem class-basically everything you took in the 10th grade for the regents. This man cannot teach to save his life. Will not answer questions b/c its too time consuming but will retell the story of how he would walk 14 miles to school, uphill both ways that takes up 20 min of class.

Had him for CHE106 & 107 and CHE111LAB. Unless you already know chemistry don't take his class. He is all over the place with his lectures and goes off topic a lot. He assigns a ton of homework throughout the week. He is a much better lab professor so I do suggest him for lab.

Very difficult class. Attendance required, check in sheet every class. Lectures are long, typically Hoag runs off on tangents not relating much to chemistry. Text book and tutors are a necessity. Lots of homework, online too, 3 or 4 a week. Tests are fill in the blanks and math based. Hoag is very nice and tries, but not very good at teaching.

Not helpful and goes off on tangents about things not even related to Chemistry. Many people were in the class for the second time and he does not care if you pass or fail.

This professor is not for anyone who has not had chemistry courses before this one. Professor's teaching method is unclear and inefficient. The textbook would be the only thing that gets you by. Professor would make mistakes and not know what he should do or will not try to correct it out of fear of screwing up again.

i had him for my chem11lab and i really enjoyed the fellow. even though he can ramble in the pre lab, you wont need to do ask him a questions while doing the lab. He is fair with grading and when he gives reviews before your test its usually only 1 on 1 or 1 on a few. i would take him again for a lab. maybe not for his courses though.

This is the worst class I have ever taken at Plattsburgh. The class is very unstructured, the rules make no sense, he's disrespectful to the students, and the tests are impossible for someone with no experience in chemistry. Its a self taught class, the book is imperative. When asking Hoag a question he tells you to check the text book. Stay away.

Worst teacher i have ever had. His rules in class make no sense, he sets you up to fail by going over the easy material in class and making you read the text for the hard material. I feel like he got bullied a lot through out his life.

Pros: All exam probs are from HW, HW helps you learn Chem well, he helps when you ask at feasible times, he puts many things to class vote, he knows a lot of chem. Cons: He gives many probs, he makes oversight errors in math, he digresses into stories, he emails HW corrections a lot. Bottom Line: His HW means you have to work, but he will help.

One of the worst Professors I have ever had, the man is more concerned about himself and trying to be buddy-buddy with his students than he is with the course material, and it shows. He constantly makes mistakes, which makes going to class counterproductive. Take the course with another professor or be prepared to learn the material yourself.

once you get by his teaching method the information in there you just have to listen to it. I found it to show maturity not to talk back to him during class and listen to him. He is in charge of your grade it is in your best interest to study and utilize the study center

The class is very straight forward. He gets side tracked easily. He does have a large ego, but if you get around it an listen for the data, you can do well. He does not proof read his tests, there tend to be errors.

Since I am a Biochem senior, this is for all the freshman who are now entering in CHEM. DO NOT TAKE CHEM 111 OR 112 WITH THIS MAN!. he is bad for all the other reasons that you have probably read already. Wait a semester or summer untill Miller or someone else. You will understand much more and prepare you much more for if you met him in Phy Chem.
