Avoid this professor at all costs if you can do so. To begin, other than being required - his coursework is useless. He tries to intimidate his students by being a hard grader and calling students out in class in a condescending manner. He would go on an on about how racism has enriched his life as a professor. He was the worst professor ever!

OMG hard! My fault.. I could not understand statistics to save my life! It should be a prerequisite. That and his sense of humor is an acquired taste..one I still have not acquired. The subject is interesting as heck! Helped me understand a lot more about some of the profs and why they think the way they do.

Really good teacher. You have to go to class to pass. He is really clear and passionate about the subject. Not easy tests are all application so be prepared to learn how to apply theory outside your own perspective.

Very entertaining and passionate about the subject. I love the his stories. You must really pay attention in class and ask a lot of questions. He is aspproachable and very helpful. You get the grade you earn and you have to work so hard for it that I remember this class the most several years later. I highly recommend him!

What should have been a fairly easy class (to me) turned out to be just the opposite. I read some other comments and I guess it depends on who you are and what you look like. I attended class everyday, I took good notes, I wrote very lengthy, very thorough essays for the exams and still did no fair too well in this class. He's a bit theatrical!!

Dr. Oettinger's class is challenging, but he is not as bad as some people make him out to be. All you have to do is go to class, read the assigned articles, and take lecture notes. That's how I made an A in his class.

I have no idea why this man would have any negative comments. He is one of the few teachers who actually expects college level work. Wonderful teacher, very passionate. As for using the "N" word, he teaches minorities in america. obviously it is to make a point of how other people speak, he is not ****. Come on. People are so stupid.

This professor gives take home exams BUT! ARE HARD ESSAY'S! He grades VERY hard and takes out point for everything. In this class you literally have to fight for every point. I would not recommend this class. EXTREMELY HARD GRADER!

Dr. Ottinger is very clear about what he requires to pass his class, pure regurgitation is a necessity, do not have an opinion and certainly do not challenge his. The fact that I am required to regurgitate his opinion is neither relevant nor conducive to a productive learning environment. It ticks me off wasting my money for professors like these.

I LOVE DR. Oettinger!! IF you go to class and take notes, you will do fine. He repeats the theories you need to learn over and over. If you do not get something then call him at home. I learned so much. Great Professor!

Attendance is not mandatory but it is necessary to get a good grade.You will rely heavily on your notes to pass this class.The book is not needed.He is very helpful and offers extra credit.He is willing to help you if you call him or go by his office.I made a 49 on my midterm and ended the semester with B+.I learned a lot.

This instructors class is not going to be for everyone. Students should plan to study hard and to find support groups within the classroom and in the writing center. He is not like anyother professor I have had in the past and students should be prepared the first day he will try to intemidate you with his attire.

His lectures consist of him impersonating the different theorists. It helps you get a feel for what each of them were saying and why. Uses the N word in context when trying to tell people how it was in the 1950's. He gives extra credit and offers a lot of help. He's an awesome instructor and is teaches because he loves it.

Come to class, take LOTS of notes. He tells you exactly what you will need for midterm, final and quiz. I didn't use my book - everything relevant was discussed in lecture. He wants you to work in groups - I didn't and was fine. Make sure you take notes, come to class and ask questions when you are confused. Great instructor - but not an easy class

The course is about CLASS, STATUS, AND POWER but it should have been a class only on Blacks and Whites. I was very uncomfortable with this professor using racial derogatory terms as part of his lectures(yeah the "N" word) and how women are not rare and talented individuals. WARNING! Your guts will turn inside out. Exams are HARD!!!

Class lecture is not designed for anyone who may have to miss class due to family emergencies, work delays, etc. Group work is not dependable if you are not comfortable with begging for others to help you with what you have missed. I did not like this class but I did better than I thought I would. I took lots of notes...and trust me take lots of notes. Take home tests are not easy!!
