His exams are fair and so are his final grades. Everything on the exams, you have seen before, whether as homework or in class problems or proofs. I recommend him if you are really interested to do well and are willing to work hard.

I came out of theoretical math actually feeling that I know what I'm doing. He's tough, but a good teacher. My grade at the end of the year was very fair. That being said, I would not take him for a class like calculus unless if you really want to have to memorize definitions, proofs, etc.

Tests emphasize definitions and cover a great deal of material. The lectures were fairly enjoyable and Chao did a decent job of presenting the material, often with interesting sidenotes on the history of abstract algebra and its organization as a mathematical "subfield" (ho ho ho)

If you really want to learn mathematics, Dr. Chao is your best bet. If you're just taking a math class because it is required, look elsewhere. Exams may be tricky--you MUST learn definitions and simple proofs--but fair with final grades. He's helpful in office hours if you are prepared.

Comment:
This professor requires one to learn definitions because it "explains" how to solve the problems. Once one does the problems, it is easy to "memorize" the definition. He requires alot of work. He was my most important teacher of my now "successful" career.

Do not take this professor. He is a nice guy and he tries to help, but there's a definite language barrier and the class is not structured whatsoever. He also goes into too much detail on deriving formulas...which is pointless! After getting an A in calc I, I struggled for a B- in this class.

JUST RUN... he can't teach calculus, the book is a waste (except for the coveted solutions manual), and the TAs are more clueless than you are... that having been said, Chao is a nice guy and he's hilarious... he claims that if you do well in his class you'll be "rich and famous"... nuff said

This is the WORST professor I have ever had. He rambles and half of the time he teaches stuff IRRELEVANT to Calc 2. Our test average was 43% and he blamed us students entirely! Avoid this professor AT ALL COSTS.

This class was tough. Taught us as if we were grad math majors, not algebra students. Thank god for my TA. Or I wouldn't have squeezed thru with a C.

One of the nicest professors i've ever had...very difficult tests, kind of unclear in class, but go to his office and he's very supportive and tries. Many office hours! Got lower grades than I wanted but it was worth it

Very difficult tests; his philosophy is that we should all be smart like him, or we deserve to fail. He knows his stuff, but he doesn't know how to teach it, and his exams usually average around 50%.

Previous comments are right on the money. Sometimes hard to understand. Know definitions, very long final for 1180. Did learn information though.

awesome guy, linear algebra was hell though, helped you out a lot, genuinely wanted to students to do well and did anything he could to help you out. word to the wise, if he says anything about definitions, memorize them!!! hes not kidding! tons of them!!

practice your memorization math nerds. you must regurgitate info exactly as he presents it. he wants students to do well, but the class is hard and he never answers questions during class.

Not the clearest speaking, and demands the best from students. Very supportive during office hours. One of my worst grades, but one of my greatest learning experiences.
