I loved Stouck. His lectures were interesting (most of the time) and he doesn't speak in a monotone. He's very helpful if you have questions and the midterm: SO EASY!

Stouck is incredibly knowledgable and quite liberal for a man his age. Some bicker that his lectures are irrelevant to the texts, but he is forcing you to engage your mind and to apply the readings to the real world. His oratory skills aren't the greatest, but its not how he speaks, its what he speaks. Very insightful.

Great Prof. Made B.C. Lit interesting and knows a lot about what he's teaching. Takes an effort to get to know the students. I learned to appreciate SFU because of him which I did not think was possible.

Comment:
The theory was probably relevent however perhaps a bit on the sophisticated side for an introductory 100-level course? One of the best profs in the Engl dept.. Why are they all retiring? Genuinely cares about students and his teaching: a rarity these days.

His lectures have nothing to do with writing: you won't learn to write in this class. All he does is talk about sex and queer theory, applying it to every book and every short story. After a while, its just boring. No need to go to lectures, as TA marks with a totallu different style. Worst prof I've had so far.

It's true that his lectures aren't that relevant but I suggest you go anyways since he always opens up a new idea for you to think about. He's an OK prof, midterm seems easy but isn't.

Comment:
Clearly this professor has substantial problems as all texts he assigns includes a clear description about sex. Not only that he communicates each class with the word "sexuality" all the time. His lectures provide no help for your english ability and he has a speaking problem continiously pausing after each sentence.

His lecture is BORING , it doesnt make sense if u go to his lecture if your work is marked by another TA who has a total different opionion towards the txt !! His lecture is useless.

He is the most uninspiring English prof I have ever had and actually comes off more as an Canadian lit groupie and stalker than an intelligent person. Stuck on the unimaginative paradigms of theory he is totally unoriginal

David Stouck is my best prof at SFU. His passion for literature (Russian in this case) has inspired me to do very well in the course. If you like the material in his course, you will do very very well

He does a really good job at explaining stories according to important theoretical concepts. He gives emotion and passion to his teaching, and really puts his heart into it. But he is hard to talk to..talking to him is like talking to a brick wall.

he pauses frequently which makes you think he's thinking... but he's actually trying to remember what he told the previous semester's class -- unoriginal and uninspiring.

Encourages discussion, especially if you are in his tutorial group. Well spoken, organized, and makes the lectures interesting for the most part. He does require that you buy his book, but the book is a very nice collection of short stories. Enjoyable.
