Needs of Newcomers was a service learning class. We all worked with immigrants. Amazing readings and discussions. Required weekly essays. Dr. P is a real teacher.

One of the most engaged and inspiring profs. Unfailing dedication to students. Its a lot of work especially the first half of the class, which he team taught with the great Dr. Arend. Even though I've graduated I think about this class a lot.

The class itself is amazing and I would highly recommend it. However, Dr. P has his favorites. While he is helpful to all, he is more responsive to you if he feels that there is a chance he can influence your life direction in some manner. If it becomes obvious that you are more independently minded, he won't treat you the same as previously.

An amazing course, co-taught with Prof. Arend. This was one of the best courses I have taken at Georgetown. I learnt an incredible amount. However, there is a lot of reading but the grading is fair and he is very helpful. Definately go to his office hour discussions -- they help immensely.

You hand in a one page paper, he gives you two pages of comments back. He puts more effort into his classes (and students) than could possibly be expected. All around nice guy who cares about his students and their lives.

By far the best class I have ever taken at Georgetown. Dr. Porterfield encourages you to think and is always willing to meet with you after class. He also actually cares what is going on in your life. The class was challenging, but worth it.
