Loved Dr. Ritschel, the small class size (only 10 of us) made the class very engaging and discussion orientated. He clearly cares for the subject and the students. He was also a really fair grader who gave clear feedback and gave students a chance to resubmit papers. Instead of punishing us for a bad paper #3 he pushed back paper 4. I love ritschel

Great lecturer. It was obvious he was very knowledgeable and cared about what he was teaching. Four 3-page papers with a lot of reading. He also gives good feedback on your papers. Attendance is graded, and especially in the classes before paper is due he'll give class a guide on what to write about.

If you are at all interested in a career in history, take this class. You will learn what academic history is all about and your writing skills will dramatically improve. He is a fair grader and his papers are easy and fun to write. He makes a class on methodology really fun, and he explains boring concepts in really interesting and engaging ways.

Dr. Ritschel's class turned an ordinarily boring class about a variety of topics I have little experience with, into something memorable. The class has a ton of reading and writing, but his feedback on the drafts of the historiographical paper was specific and extremely helpful for shaping myself as a writer. I

Dr. Ritschel is a great professor. Really enjoyed his class. 4 papers and that's all of your grade with the exception of participation which is about 10% of your final grade, so show up if you want an A. Great lectures, everything he wants in your papers is given to you in the lectures. Papers aren't that bad, first three are 4-5 pages each.

First class I took as a history major and he made me truly understand what would be involved to have a career as a historian. He really took the time to explain the career outlook, what grad school would be like. Teaches you how to really think like a historian. Papers are short but take some real thought. Funny and not bad to look at (Silver fox!)

Great professor. Lectures a bit dull, but he leads absolutely fantastic discussion groups. Very knowledgeable. TAs were dodobirds though. On a random note, his voice is freaking amazing. Could listen to him all day np.

This class is not the most interesting, but it's mandatory for majors. Dr. Ritschel is not so bad. His TAs were very helpful and quite knowledgeable. I learned a lot about writing and history in this course.

Class topic was Film and History. Class was a BREEZE--didn't open the textbooks once/watch a movie, and did not need to, exams were based solely on lectures. Attendance was 10% of grade. Has a good sense of humor and overall nice guy. Very heavy reliance on TA, but she was great as well.

Dr Ritschel is a very likeable person and a decent prof. He has a thorough knowledge of hte subjec and his extremely helpful when approached. Big warning here. If you like to use a notebook computer in class, he does not allow them. For that reason I will not take a class from him again.

Dr. Ritschel is one of my favorite professors at UMBC. He does rely on his TA for some things, but it's good experience for the TA and it certainly doesn't take away from his teaching style. If you attend lectures and take good notes, you'll do quite well on the papers. He usually tells you exactly what he wants to see. The rest is writing style.

I have taken several classes with Dr. Ritschel, and he was also my advisor. I can honestly say that Dr. Ritschel was probably the best teacher I had at UMBC. You do have to work for your grade in his courses, but the knowledge you gain is priceless. I would highly recommend any class tought by Dr. Ritschel.

I don't know what's up with these negative reviews, Dr. Ritschel's a great prof, he had to FAIL ME (my own fault) for 474 and I still like him--not 'snobby' at all. the *best* 201 instructor ever, I think-I back up the 1st comment on this page, the man created a passion for the subject still with me

Basically, the class itself is interesting but he's not. His teaching style is a huge turnoff and his unknown (possibly faux British) accent drives me nuts. TAs in the class are good but he's not. Take this class with Jeffries.

His class is hard and the lectures are a bit of a pain to get through- but its 2 1/2 hours so its to be expected. he does give off a snobbish attitude but he's really helpful and knows his stuff. A good professor but need to take him with a grain of salt- but id recommend him
