Prof Soyer is a good teacher. I found his class really interesting. The class consisted of mainly student presentations and lecturing. He is a hard grader on essays, but I found the topics interesting enough to do well. I would totally take his class again!

Dr. Soyer is a good teacher. Expect to write 3 papers (5 pages each) throughout the semester. These 3 papers with a 5-minute presentation for each paper constitutes most of a student's grade. Not a difficult grader if you actually try to write a well-thought out essay. Would recommend his class. Documents he gives are interesting and informative.

Prof. Soyer barely taught our class. In a class of 30 students, we each had to give three five minute presentations throughout the semester so the classes were 10% him lecturing and 90% students presenting powerpoints on the readings. He is a tough grader and I hate to say it, but pretty boring too. I do not feel like a learned much in his class.

Mr. Soyer was a great professor for US History, he really loves History and it shows through his teaching. He has a monotone voice which can be boring, but once you do the readings (which you don't really have to) they are pretty interesting and participation is fun. 3 essays, 1 debate, no midterm and the final is an essay which he tells the prompt

Professor Soyer has a very dry personality. His class consists of long lectures on very boring material. There are no quizzes or tests, just three essays, one debate and the final. He is very concise, but is a very very tough grader. You can have him look over your essay and he'll still give you an 80 on the paper. can get away with not reading hw.

STAY AWAY horrible professor. I can't complain enough about it. Three long essays, tough grader even when handing in rough drafts. (Still received a C when correcting all marks on draft.) Would never recommend. Also, probably the most boring professor at FU

Really knew the material, but the lectures he gave were long, boring, and had little to do with the material tested. There was only one long paper. Tough class overall.

He is not a bad teacher. However, he is a hard grader when it comes to writing assignments. He really knows what he is talking about, however the lectures he gives have absolutely nothing to do with what is graded, which are writing assign. This is a good thing, though, because if you were to skip or miss class, you wouldn't be missing anything.

Awful class. lectures are boring, readings don't matter, and everything comes down to an irrelevant final paper.

You do not have to do the readings for each class. He is an extremely boring lecturer, but if you participate at least once a class you will be fine as far as your participation grade is concerned. He is a tough grader, and everything comes down to a massive final paper that is entirely unrelated to the course.

Honestly, the readings aren't important. Write a good paper and you'll do well. I did well on a paper without having any idea what I was actually writing about just by closely reading a few words used in a text.

STAY AWAY. Lectures and "required readings" are irrelevant to your grade. Your entire grade is based off one paper (and critiques on its sources)and a debate which you will know nothing about. Don't waste time on readings, nod your head when he looks and your good. His grading is unfair and basically gives everyone in the class a B no matter what.

Seems harmless, but can really be a condescending jerk. I loved the class material but his lectures are unclear and boring. So much useless and time consuming work. Would not recommend him....a disappointing experience to say the least.

Dr. Soyer is an excellent professor who is always available for his students. In addition, he is understanding. That he is knowledgeable, especially in areas of NYC politics and US immigration, goes without saying. I highly recommend this professor. Responding to an earlier post, I have found him to always read and comment on my papers.

Contrary to the previous author's comments, I found Dr. Soyer to be extremely passionate about his profession and very supportive to all his graduate students. I personally found his feedback to be both constructive and challenging and I'm a better professional for having taken Dr. Soyer's courses. Oh, and he read all of my papers!

I want to say something nice because the man tried very hard to make class as easy as possible, but as a graduate student I had much higher expectations for my experience at Fordham. The biggest disappointment was the realization that Professor Soyer really didn't care enough to read the final draft of my graduate thesis. Gives good grades at least

I love American History, but what Dr. Soyer teaches is not standard American History. Lectures are unclear and biased. Way too much group work, so if you as an individual do well, group work will bring you down. Grading is completely unfair. Assignments are absolutely useless, and even when you try hard, you still end up with a B. Hated this class

Probably one of the worst professors that I've had at Fordham. His lectures are a mess, his grading on papers is unfair, and there are many time consuming assignments (on top of 3 papers). Stay away.
