Advice for older/mature students who value professionalism and understand the accumulating cost of college: avoid this instructor like the Plague. You will not only feel ripped off and discouraged, but frustrated to the point where your other classes suffer due to the time required to merely earn a passing grade.

Likes to belittle his students. Rebuffs constructive criticism. He needs to take a course on good technical writing--his course materials/powerpoints are very poorly written and confusing. Good guy to have a beer with but a terrible teacher and communicator. He is now at Century College.

Most of the people flaming Dave Blackburn are just angry that they didn't get an A in his class. I personally studied for his tests and payed attention in lecture and got an easy A.

This class was the worst experience with chemistry that I've had as a chem major. His lectures were useless, his tests were impossibly hard for the homework and lectures, and his arrogance made him unapproachable and uninteresting. If you have the chance, take ANY other professor!

I do not like how he teaches. Too much talking but not enough notes. And I don't find his lame jokes funny at all. I should have switched to the other professor the first week!!

Comment:
Blackburn is a decent speaker, but his lectures are a waste of time. He covered material in a very general manner, and always made mistakes when working out example problems. He spent 3/4 of lecture playing with his MS Excel spreadsheet which was pointless. I earned a B+ in his class without attending most lectures or really trying at all.

His lectures are great, his tests are hard. I liked him enough to take all of my gen chem through him but he does have a reputation for being tough. He's very clear and occassionally blows things up in class (intentionally).
