Carey is very invested in his field and passionate about LA, especially Guatemala. The workload is pretty heavy and the grading is tough. He'll provide you with a lot of individual feedback, advice, and guidance but it's no cakewalk so be prepared to work hard. He has a good sense of humor though and is generally pleasant.

Professor Carey grades your papers in this course on your grammar and style. There are no exams. No matter how much you read and no your topic or how well you present your thesis the passive voice or disorganization will kill your grade. Besides that he is a great professor who is very passionate not only about LA history, but also about teaching.

Very very hard grader on midterms and test. Course should be entitled the Sociology of Latin American instead of the history of Latin America. Focuses almost primarily on race and gender issues. Coursework is too demanding for an level 100 class. Expectation is more 300 level to graduate level.

Professor Carey is an extremely knowledgable, open, honest, and hardworking teacher. His classes are definitely challenging, but he is also fair. A lot of information is covered in his survey courses...that's kind of what they're all about, though, isn't it? He is always willing to lend a hand to students who need it, but don't expect him (or anyone else) to put up with students who are just lazy and looking to sail through. I can't recommend his classes highly enough to those willing to actively learn.

Prof. Carey is a nice guy who is genuinely concerned with his teaching. He grades papers like it's an English class and tests can be pretty specific (take good notes- even if he talks too fast). Very open to feedback and discussion.

Very fast, very unclear. Teaches like he's reading from a list of facts. Tests include unfair and irrelevant questions and essays are harshly graded. Avoid like the plague.
