Class isn't really that bad at all. Definitely try to participate in class and keep good attendance as he does seem to be more lenient with students who care and talk in lecture. Quizzes are all about remembering terms from the books and articles. Do the readings and read the chapters and you'll be able to pull of an A.

This guy is totally out of his mind. He is such a smug person that is so proud of himself for being able to read a few lines of music. I think i understand the native tribe music he plays better than his ridiculous lectures. Do not take if you have trouble controlling your anger.

He is a really nice professor and quite honestly you do have to work in the class to get a good grade. Dont take the class if you expecting it to an easy A class. The quizzes are not too hard as long as you pay attention and look over the textbook.

Super fun class: You'll have fun learning about the music in every region. Sit for lectures, listen to him (the class is fun, you watch videos listen to music, have presentations). Some classes are pure lecture but nevertheless pay attention and you'll do great in his class! Loved him as he's awesome and helpful and approachable too!

He assigns a group project which almost everyone gets an A on, it's really easy. The exams are tough, you have to go to class and take notes to to well. The exams are listening, filling the blank, multiple choice, short answer, and essay. If you go to class, it's an easy A. Also a final paper that's 7-8 pages. REALLY NICE guy, but a bit boring.

Professor Chapman's lectures are clear and interesting. He makes sure to repeat key ideas and terms from the end of one class at the beginning of the next, and is very patient with questions. He is also good about deadlines and makeup exams, and honestly wants to work with students on doing well in the class. Great option for 21c. Challenges.

This class is easy if you pay attention to all the details in his lecture. Most of the information on exams are directly from his lectures. There are three exams, a final paper, a group presentation, and a 1-2 page paper to go with the presentation. The presentation and the papers were not difficult. Must study to do well on exams.

Honestly, don't get me wrong he's a really nice guy. But the class format is kinda just him talking to you for the entire class. On top of that the tests were more difficult than usually even with studying. I'm a decent student but if you are an above and beyond student you will do well. Tests are too difficult is the main problem.

He is so sweet and passionate about the subject. Easy A if you do the following: show up to most classes and raise your hand a few times, study for a few hours before the tests, and have an interest in the material. Musical background is helpful but not necessary. 3 tests, paper, presentation (very chill, don't worry). Get older txtbook edition.

Professor Chapman is easily one of the sweetest professors at Rutgers. He shows his interest in music in every class and he's always in a happy mood, which makes the learning environment good. He always addresses questions and explains terms with clarity. Highly recommended if you have already have a music background. Easy A. Don't need the book.

One of the loveliest, as well as funniest professors I've had at Rutgers. As long as you take notes in class and keep up with work, this class is easy. I had no prior musical background and did just fine.

He is the nicest professor I had in my life. He likes to teach and help students. He is very knowledgeable about his subject. you'll have to take notes and pay attention to what he says to know what to study for the test. He asks specific questions you won't think it'll be on the test. He loves to talk to students about music :)

4 Exams that were worded in such a difficult manner. 2 Concert written papers. Online discussions which are annoying. To actually get a good grade you have to all lecture classes although attendance is not mandatory. If you have no prior music background knowledge DO NOT take this class. You will not enjoy the work because its a workload to learn.

Enjoyed this class a lot. The quizzes were tricky, but the essays were not hard to do at all. He made everything clear and easy for someone who does not know much about music. He and the TAs were extremely nice and helpful. Attend class, read the textbook, do the homework and you can definitely get an A. Not a difficult class.

chapman's a really sweet guy who enjoys music. it's not a particularly work intensive class but if you don't have any prior knowledge of music theory, i would NOT take it. class is 4 quizzes, 4 online discussions, 2 concert reports and a final. he gives away a lot of whats on the quiz in class so go, kinda boring but worth it.

This is a really hard class for non-music major. You need to memorize a lot for the exams. And also outside concerts plus discussion on sakai, which is kinda annoying. I do not recommend this class at all.
