I went in to this class afraid of what I'd gotten myself in to & seriously questioning my choice to major in Sociology! It wasn't at all what I expected! Dr. Ford (who is retiring after the summer) is fantastic!! Yes, he's a tough grader & expects a lot but he's passionate about the subject . I learned a lot. Glad I took this class from Dr Ford!!

Took for Theory. He did a great job of lecturing over each theorist. He gives extra credit with a jeopardy game with groups so it can be easy to get 5-10 bonus points before each test. You'll need to study in order to pass. He gives essay questions out about 3-4 weeks before the exam. They need to be overly thorough with multiple citations.

Don't skip class. Dr Ford's reputation scared me off initially but both his classes turned out to be the best quality and most enjoyable classes I've ever taken. He doesn't grade leniently but is still very fair. His classes are informative and more value-neutral than most, a rarity which I very much appreciate. Wish there were more classes by him.

From someone into Sociology and the theories, this class was challenging. The ability to write and clearly articulate thought is a must -- your grade heavily depends on essays. Approach this class with focus and you will be fine -- it is one fo the final courses, afterall. He takes this discipline seriously and I cannot fault him for that.

Incredibly hard, must be very determined to pass and put out maximum effort, not able to procrastinate and pass. One test can contain as many as 9 theorists to study. Class is very boring as he lectures the entire time. Papers are long and tedious. Does give some extra credit- take it all and don't miss class, take good notes or record lectures.

Awful! You must write 9 papers, all based on opinion (sounds easy enough right?) Hell no. Not only is it impossibly hard but his grading is his OWN opinion. He wants you to take a theorist from the 1800's and try to figure out what they might think about todays issues. His standards are impossible to meet. Good luck. Don't buy books just study guide.

Many students dread Theory. It is one of the most difficult classes for the Sociology degree. But everything that you need to know about Sociology you'll learn in Dr. Ford's Theory class. I loved his class. It is hard work, you will have to write A LOT. But if you are a good student and work hard you will retain a lot of knowledge.

you have to work for your grade, class is simple, gives you the material ahead of time, overwhelms you w/ so much material for one test. Critiques are difficult. Examples used are out of date, little interaction with students during class. He's not an awful person, just passionate about sociology.

Big words do not a professor make. I had Ford for Theory. His notes are ancient and irrelevant. Of the three required books, I used one. I found that the less analysis and effort I put into my papers, the better my grades. I got an A but retained nothing and learned more theory from Miller's Stratification than from him. Shameful.

Dr Ford has a reputation that precedes him. however, he really is a nice guy that cares about his students. You do have to work in his class. It is the hardest class I have taken thus far. However, he provides extra credit opportunities and is always available to chat in his office. Don't be scared just be prepared to work for your grade.

Comment:
Dr. Ford is needlessly difficult. His explanations of various theory concepts are not all that helpful. He takes his explanations from the required books, but leaves out key details when relating them to the class. His Kinloch notes are 20 years old and his grading standards are arbitrary. I like him as a person, but not as a professor.

He is very compassionate about his subject. A lot of students aren't used to being held responsible for their own education. He expects that from his students. Dr. Ford challenges you and his class teaches you to challenge yourself. He believes in hard work and his door is always open to his students. Words to the wise...attend all classes.

Dr. Ford is a great professor. His hardest course is Theory but The Family is easy. His teaching method is to challenge the student not to make the work hard. He will answer any question you may have and will explain anything that may be unclear. He is great and I enjoyed his classes.

You will work your butt off, but it's worth it. He tends to play favorites with students, and he can come across a little insulting at times, but he's not as bad as people make him out to be. He expects you to apply yourself and really think.

I'm not sure about the prior comments I read about his personality. I (a female) find him to be funny and charming. I don't feel belittled by him and I feel that he wants to involve everyone. If I say something ridiculous more than once, he may tease, and that might be misconstrued. I enjoy friendly bantering. The class is not easy, but managable.

Most of his points come from a 10+ pg. paper, but the questions on his exams come straight from a handout you get in the beginning of the semester. He likes to make you write but you always know what's on the test before hand, word for word. Some say he hates women, but he's helpful and loves his job though he can put you to sleep.

not impossible to do well in this class. take home essay exams should just involve applying soc. theory to modern day life (try to make them 2 1/2 pages if you can). Keep up with studying the theory folder a couple weeks in advance...makes it easier than memorizing it all in just a couple of days.
