Well organized and effective in his teaching method. Spends numerous hours preparing his lectures, and makes statistics straightwork, even for mathematics boneheads.

I thought that he was a nice enough guy but he really needs to learn that some people just work better alone and not in groups

I found him dull and too much into group work. I don't want to rely on other peoples work for my own marks thanks

I really enjoyed the first half of this course (readings, films etc.), but wasn't overly thrilled with the last half (with the exception of the film "Being There"). That said, Gartrell seems to sincerely care about the material he's teaching, and he takes pains to listen to his students' contributions. And yes, he's totally chilled out.

If your looking for a laid back summer class look elsewhere, no a really difficult marker but almost imposible to get above 85% on assignments. A lot of work, but makes it fairly interesting.

Summer class, lots of work especially first half, but fair marker. Great class interaction. Great guy and down to Earth. I would recommend Gartrell to any student who's willing to put in the work to get a good mark. Gives you two exams and an essay as well as a series of discussion papers that we hand in and discuss in groups.

Seems laid back, but isn't. Who cares that much about stats in a religion class? Summer slackers beware.

simple , poor and calm. His music reminds me by the old peaceful generation. So fair with students and also considerate I recommends him for teaching.

We like to call him Dr. Patience. So nice and helpful. Very cool guy, plays sweet music in class, shows wicked movies, you play games for chocolate and you learn a heck of a lot. He really cares and is a genuinely good human being.

Really nice and layed back guy. Not too hard, but you have to study for them. Learned a lot in his class and would recommend him. Not intimidating at all and makes you feel welcome. There was lots of work but the course didn't feel intense.

Tried to pack way too much stuff in to this class; be prepared to write off anything else that might be happening in your life (work, family, breathing) because you won't have time for it. A great guy but forgets that not all of us are Harvard material.
