I felt degraded and humiliated constantly. Hes horrible at rehearsing and clearly just wants to inflate his own ego.

Haven't had him for that long, but he seems like he really knows what he's talking about, and seems like a really nice guy. Yeah, he's a little strict sometimes, but conductors need to be strict!

I played in his orchestra for 3 yrs during MM/DMA. Then, I won Concertmaster of a ROPA orchestra. 15 years later, I still remember so much of what he taught me about orchestra technique and musicality. Despite the negative comments I'm reading here, Hoose is an amazing educator. Soak it in now--you won't get this kind of intense training again!

Some of the comments here refer Hoose as "an incredible musician" and having great musicianship. Folks, those descriptions DO NOT justify how poorly he treats students. His vile egotism and terrible attitude is intolerable. Notice his favorites happen to be females? I'm also betting that some of the positive reviews here are from females, too.

If you're reading this, you probably have to take the class. The honest truth is that this guy makes orchestra a soul-sucking experience through a well-crafted combination of egotism, abrasiveness, horrible rehearsal technique, and the belief that he is the world's foremost conductor, the BUSO is the world'd foremost orchestra.

I have worked with Hoose for 2 years at BU and 1 at BUTI. He can be hard to follow sometimes but his incredible musicianship makes up for anything you can't understand. He is very willing to help people and learn about them outside the classroom. The results he produces end up really incredible even if he doesn't manage time well. Great conductor!

Let's be honest, the man is incredibly egotistical. It is so obvious that he plays favorites - this favoritism often translates into seatings, which unfortunately hinders a lot growth and leadership development in young musicians. He can be quite condescending and vicious, but I honestly think he's been on treatment, so he's getting much better.

Not the best time or man manager in the World, but he is a incredible musician who demands excellence from his orchestra. Annoying habit of turning full rehearsals into string sectionals, but this is outweighed by the musicality and sheer passion he pours into everything he does. Has a funny reputation, but if you try your best then he's great.

He demands greatness from students. He does not manage his rehearsal time well. But he truly care about the music. I learned much from him. He is a passionate musician.

He pretends like he cares about your opinion but he just wants things played the way he wants them. He holds grudges and has awful rehearsal technique in that he spends so much time on tiny details that they sound great but the piece as a whole still is not good. Also, a lot of the time he doesn't let people be absent for legitimate reasons.

He is a completely different person from last year, to the point where it is almost disturbing. I am no longer terrified out of my mind to go to orchestra rehearsals, and I feel like he is now approachable and receptive if you want/need to talk to him. Quite a nice change, I hope it lasts.

I had Hoose for BUTI 3 years ago and he was mean, causing people to cry (though I felt if you practiced he was harmless). I am happy to report that he has changed ALOT and now doesn't insist on keeping an atmosphere of fear. He is respectful, doesn't raise his voice/ embarass people and is extremely good at rehearsing small details. I love orchest

He's much better then he was last year but he is still an ass. If he gets his eye on you for doing something, he'll never give it up. You'll be stuck in chamber for the rest of the year. He only picks his favorite music to play and never does anything "outside the box".

I am the author of a previous negative review. I have to say, I'm stunned by how different Hoose is this fall. All the good things from last year are still in place, but the flaws are radically diminished. He's much calmer and nicer now, and he's really encouraging independent artistry in orchestra, for a change! Hope he keeps it up.

An egotistical ass. He thinks he's a big name conductor, but nobody has ever heard of him outside of Boston. He's obviously got some people convinced that he's a big deal, so they let him treat them like crap in hopes that he'll let them bask in his glory. Oh well. I'd stay away if I were you.

As a conductor, he is technically good, but as a teacher, he is among the worse. He also plays favorites and is sometimes downright mean.

How this guy keeps a job is a mystery. Bad people skills, temperamental, inconsistent: a real head case. If you sit under his conducting, you will surely hate him before long. A micromanager. His style makes you doubt you abilities and play badly.

Man, if you can't handle the heat, get off the stage. Don't confuse an intensely demanding edicational philosophy with his skill. If you're going to cry about his personality, go right ahead. Don't criticize his conducting just because you want him to say please and thanks. He's a competant, passionate musician and you're lucky to play under him.
