Comment:

He's an amazing person, is very caring and passionate about music. However, I don't think he is a very good conductor. He's sometimes very confusing and heavily relies on the students capabilities to sight read. Bel Canto is worth doing if you want to stay involved with music and are willing to put in the time time requirements (which is a lot).

Dr. Hughes has his quirks but what bothers me is that he does NOT take suggestions and cares too much about how he is perceived. I can often see through his facade and it bothers me that he has to put on an act in front of people. He also changes the way he conducts when he is in front of an audience, which throws the choir off completely.

Comment:

Bel Canto was one of the most fulfilling classes I've ever took. I was a little nervous joining an all girls choir but I loved it. I highly suggest it for incoming freshman. I also had Dr. Hughes for private voice. He is very encouraging, though unpredictable as to whether he will be over critical or too easy going.

If you are considering a graduate degree in choral music, RUN! There are some excellent music professors and conductors at APU, but he's the only professor of choral music at graduate level. He is an ineffective conductor (his women's ensemble is barely adequate musically) and his communication skills are virtually nil. RUN, RUN LIKE THE WIND!!!

Dr.Hughes (DH) is SO AWESOME! He really loves each and every one of his students and makes sure that we're doing well. He is a great director and I couldn't ask for a better teacher and friend! Don't listen to the negativity, he is such a wonderful person and has such a love for the Lord! He truly is amazing!

Bel Canto is a big time waster. The music is kinda bad as far as choir goes and he teaches nothing about improving the quality of his choir, however, DH is the sweetest man i know, he genuinely and passionately cares for his girls. He facilitates relationships between the girls. He's like a second dad and Bel Canto is a loving family of sisters.

David is a very nice guy.I enjoy his company outside of class but as a choir director I wish he taught more and gave less work to the irritating grad student. I agree with the last rating, Bel Canto is torture. There is nothing I remotely enjoy about it. Dr H is a great man but his class blows majorly. Would reconsider if thinking of taking class!

I have 2remember this is about Dr H & not bel canto. I HATE BEL CANTO!it feels good 2 say that. So if this were a rating on BC, i'd say CRAP. As far as Dr. H, nice guy, good director, although he's not the best. He needs 2 take more of a leader role rather than puttin it on the president. I don't see how he puts up with ALL girls. BLAH NO BEL CANTO

Mixed emotions-it's quantity over quality. we sing a lot of songs, but few are really good. No note-by-note help. The community is worth it-i now have 58 sisters! he doesn't teach us how to blend. very nice guy, and funny, and truley encourages us to grow closer to God. It is worth it!- if you can give up the time and some quality.

He does expect a lot out of you as far as reading the music goes- there's not as much note-by-note assistance. But he doesn't expect immediate perfection. Lacks knowledge as a director, or rather the skill to apply knowledge he's received. Can be unreasonable and not understanding. Shows a lot of favoritism. Hated this class with every ounce of me. Don't recommend for anyone to be in his choir. Useless experience. I was disappointed. Waste of time!
