I had him at UIUC and he was propably one of my favorite teachers at UIUC. His lectures were interesting and it was apparent that he cared about his student.

Comment:

This COLL 100 is one of the hardest classes I've taken here. This class is equivalent to MATH 214, which is a proof writing class based in number theory, infinite sets, etc. Don't take this class if you don't enjoy math. Lutzer is a great teacher and their for u but sometimes goes on odd math tangents. Good teacher, but be warned this class is hard

This is THE HARDEST CLASS EVER. I took this class as my freshman seminar because I couldn't get into anything else and it was THE WORST DECISION OF MY LIFE. Coll 100 classes are supposed to focus on presentations and be fairly easy. This class is all hard math proofs. Lutzer is not helpful during office hours and is too smart for his own good.

Honestly, he was probably the smartest and most eloquent professor I have had the privilege to listen too. However, real analysis is just too damn hard. Your best shot at this class if you're not good at writing proofs like me is to memorize all the definitions and the theorems to the letter. Memorize the proofs and get help on the problem sets.

Very nice guy, well prepared for every single class and extremely helpful during his office hour. Tests are largely based on homework, an easy A if you do some work.

I took AP Calc in high school and found it really really difficult, but I had no problem at all with Lutzer's class. I skipped some classes and didn't do the homework. I just studied the night before each quiz and test. The concepts are much simpler than AP Calc, and I'm NOT a math person, but I still did well.

I wish all teachers showed his enthusiasm and passion. One of my most touching memories was when he set up a 90 minute session after hours to demonstrate a new software program. No one showed up to see it. He simply told everyone to let him know if he should reschedule it for another day and he proceeded with class. That's truly classy.

Comment:

Lutzer is a pretty cool old guy who REALLY cares about mathematics and calculus. Although he sometimes gets a bit bogged down with theory in class, the work is not extremely difficult if you have some calc. background. Plus, the quizzes and tests all basically come from the homework, so DOING the homework is the key to success in this class.

Lacks the basic necessities to teach (vision and hearing). Also occasionally acts like a childish schoolboy, often going up on his "tippy" toes. Emphasizes his "W"s wwwwwway to much. Other than that tid bit, nice old man, good class to do well in.

Dreaded taking Calc but Lutzer made it not so bad. I thought the material was hard, but I'm anti-math, but Lutzer is extremely nice and always willing to help. He didn't make us do the Lab, instead we just had class 4 times a week. He gave homework quizzes every week so it's smart to keep up with the work. Tests were made up of review problems.

Comment:

Extremely nice and helpful. He makes Calc applications easy to understand. The labs aren't too bad either, especially if you talk to him during his office hours to make sure you got them right. The only thing that threw me for a loop was that he made the final exam questions a lot harder than all other tests, so be ready for that. Good to take.

I'm horrible math, but needed the GER and to take a calc course. Didn't do too well on the exams, but went into his office hours the week before the final and he did everything in his power to help me and went out of his way to make sure I did well. He's an awesome guy, super nice, and really enjoys what he does and gets excited about math.

Very good professor. I went into Calc dreading it but with his help in office hours have learned that it is quite manageable. He is so nice and helpful and wants his students to succeed. If you hate math, he is a good teacher to have.

What an amazing professor. Hardest math class I have ever taken, but I would take it again just to have him as the prof. Amazingly helpful and brilliant. He would not let me leave his office until he was sure I understood and that I was confident.

Dr. Lutzer is an extremely friendly and nice man. He is always genuinely willing to make time for your questions. That being said, this class was very difficult for me (although I am an english major). The way he explained the material didn't make sense.

Wow, great professor- he makes this difficult material easy to understand. I cannot emphasize this enough: Go to office hours if you need help!!!!! Lutzer will work with you one on one as often and as much as you need, even on the morning of the exam.
