Comment:
My 2nd program at Evergreen back in the early 90s was with David and another professor. He was single-handedly one of the worst teachers I have ever had. I finished my BA at the UW in Comp Lit (much better teachers!), obtained my MA in Ed (taught for 10 years), and am now a practicing attorney. David is very rude to older students.

David Marr was incredibly instrumental in my growth as a student and professional. His standards are high, which encourages those who wish to excel more than enough opportunities to do so. Never once did I feel "stupid"; I was forced to think critically and explain myself critically. He was easily influential increasing my skillset.

I am a professor myself and want to second the comments of another person here: I, too, have never forgotten how stupid David Marr made me feel -- how he nearly killed any confidence I had in myself. So much of my current teaching is inspired by his in that I work very hard to make sure I never use my power as a teacher to make students feel small

I can't recall the name of the class, nor the section, nor even if sections existed. David Marr taught what was ostensibly a writing class but it was equal parts writing, thinking and reading and the inseparable linkage between the 3. I learned more in 1 quarter from David Marr than I did from the rest of my undergraduate coursework combined.

You may forget what you have learn from a professor, but you will never forget how they made you feel. I was an older student in the mid 90s and I still remember how stupid he made me feel. I have since gotten an MEd. and have taught hundreds of students. Hopefully that one lesson he taught me is not being felt by my students today.

I was in Shakespeare's America and enjoyed David's teaching throughout. Then at the end of the quarter I got docked a credit for mising some classes. He said there was a limit to the absences we could have but he never told it to us so I had no idea. Not very flexible and apparently not that into informing students when they could lose credit.

David is observant, patient, and challenging. I constantly approached him outside of class and he was always willing to converse in his office for hours. David would suggest further readings and share his books with me if I was interested in a subject. Again, David will challenge you, but he will always work with you.

Best teacher I've had in three years at Evergreen. Serious yet funny and playful. HELPFUL. Respectful. Honest. Fair. Caring. Smart. Well-informed. Has high expectations of himself as well as his students. Fun. I can't recommend him enough. Even though he is now officially retired, he will be teaching now and then. . . SIGN UP.

Class: America Abroad. David Marr is fantastic. He's sharp as hell and not afraid to speak up. He's also very willing to help a student if the student asks. He's been an asset to helping direct me direct my studies. Too bad he's retiring soon!!!

Incredibly smart. Not very helpful unless you approach him directly and then he will bend over backwards to help you. Grades pretty hard, but if you stick with him for a while he starts to grade more favorably out of loyalty.

Marr knows his stuff. He provides detailed and sharp criticism. Very helpful for improving your essays. Philosophically he is huge into: William James, C.S. Peirce, Emerson, Nietzsche. Here is a tip: Marr will be hard on you all qtr. but in the end give y
